I'll join the clubs for Log Horizon and The Eccentric Family. The weird thing about my expectations for The Eccentric Family is that I was always expecting to enjoy it, but I wasn't expecting to enjoy it for the reasons I did; it really took me by surprise.

There's also Kotoura-san; I know a lot of people didn't like that the entire series wasn't like the first ten minutes, but I liked the series just fine the way it was.

I can't forget Henneko, either; between it and last year's Girls und Panzer, I've noticed that I tend to like series with absurd premises a lot more than I expect to when I first hear about their premises. It's actually thanks to GuP that I checked out Stella Women's Academy (etc.), another one that took me by surprise with its drama.

I almost forgot Futari wa Milky Holmes. I think I'm the only person in the world who actually liked this anime; but I'm used to that sort of thing. I'm just a sucker for anything coming-of-age-related.

And last but certainly not least, Kyousogiga. I won't elaborate on this one because it'd take me an hour to explain what I like about it and how it blew my expectations away; I think that fact speaks for itself.

Love Live! School Idol Project

Idol stuff + 100% CGI (with those annoying blinking eyes)? Really didn't sound appealing to me in the slightest.

But then I started watching it - because a lot of people who generally like similar stuff to me were praising it - and found it difficult to stop.

It's doesn't come close to even being in the running for the title of my favourite anime of the year, but it was certainly the biggest pleasant surprise for me.

Sunday Without God blew me away. I'm not even sure why I watched it, all I expected was moeblob shenanigans. What I got instead was one of the most powerful emotional experiences of the year within the first three episodes.

The second half didn't really fully deliver on the momentum of the first six episodes, but it was a great series nevertheless. Until the fall season hit it was going to be my show of the year, but it's got some competition now.

Honorable mentions:

Genshiken Nidaime, a series I wasn't familiar with before this year, gets major props for Kenjiro Hato.
The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat was a brilliant little humorous romp through ridiculousness.
Kyousougiga, another show I had no prior knowledge of and therefore no expectations for, was fantastic this fall.
The Severing Crime Edge could've been a lot more, but it had several beautiful moments anyway.
Unbreakable Machine-Doll, while not great, ended up a hell of a lot better than its first episode would infer.

And:

Kotoura-San, as others have said, had a powerful first episode. I couldn't stick with the rest of the show though.

Just going to name one: SNAFU. It was my favorite of the season if I had to choose one from all of them.

I enjoyed Love Lab a lot but it has to be Sunday Without God.

I was sooooo hooked and watched it straight through. It's an amazing anime. Hard to fault, beautiful as well.

If I can say AKB0048: Second Stage then that would be my official dark horse, but if you're just talking about a series that had no adaptations before the this year, my pick would have to be Galilei Donna :P

Just fucking around my pick would be Machine-Doll wa Kizutsukanai

Free! was a dark horse for me. See, I kind of expected I liked it cause 1) it was a sports themed anime and I love those 2) the boys were all very cute, so of course that'd add to my enjoying it, but I never thought that I would love it as much as I did. The comedy moments really stuck with me and had me laughing (Rei's detective work, his antics in episode 4, just Rei in general he really carried this show.) and even though I felt the drama dragged I could actually feel for the character's. I could related heavily to Rin's frustration at having worked extremely hard for something in his life only to be bested by someone with talent who didn't really seem to care that they had it. Plus the incredible fanservice was an immense plus, was not expecting as much as I got.

Anyway, I enjoyed Free! more than I thought I would, and nothing really else has topped its' enjoyment factor as of yet, so it stands up for top of 2013 for me.

Love Lab is my most surprising anime of the year, but I'd have to go for an anime that has weaved it's way into my favourite anime I've seen so far... Servant x Service! Absolutely loved it!

I have to say my sleepers were

1. White Album 2 - Just blew my emotions away
2. Non Non Biyori - The best "do nothing" anime of 2013
3. SNAFU - Took a couple eps. but it came through for me
4. Walkure Romanze - I just loved the character designs and the simple story
5. Genshiken Second Season - Was not expecting anything like the original but it was just as good.

I have multiple dark horses.

Arpeggio of Blue Steel is the main one, though, especially for being the only series to get a 10/10 from me this year.

Log Horizon for what was already said.

Gatchaman Crowds also gets a nod for completely flipping its genre on its head, imo.
