some of them are scammers and others are legit homeless / mentally disabled that cant catch a break
but its hard to differentiate one from another so to be safe
just give them your spare change and be on your way

I'd rather give than not give at all.

It gets real cold in the winter where I live. So if I see someone standing outside with a sign or asking for help i'd usually give them whatever money I could spare. I feel better about myself knowing that I could help someone out. And if it's a scam then to hell with it, because to me the effort of standing outside for an hour or two for a couple bucks is enough effort as is.

I have helped homeless people before. Recently I'm been thinking consciously about my decisions. l feels so guilty giving my money away, it really has to do with the way I was raised. My mom especially frowns at me whenever I do it. I think my parents have made it so that I'm lucky enough to even be able to give money to homeless people. I do not think people should be deterred from helping others at all, however the environment my parents lived in did not raised them that way.

You just have to be careful! Some of them are just scammers: looking for money to get drugs. While others really need the help. I use to give my money when I see them on the streets. I have never been to California. But I know that there are a lot of homeless people! I know there are some great people who help, and then there are the stingy ones. I commend you for you hardships and overcoming them! I hope you never have to go thru that again Ericldj
As for me, i am a member for a non-profit organization that helps the homeless in my city. I am in charge of gathering donations as well as collecting my family's and my donations. We gather around December and cook food, serve drinks, give out clothes, hats and blankets to all the people in need. It's a better way for me to help them. And to meet them. And it's a safer way rather than giving out money.

In Los Angeles I might not care as much. Austin, same deal.

I tend to give cigarettes to the homeless because I don't like to carry cash, but if I have a couple of bucks that I would normally use for tip I'm pretty indiscriminate about handing them out.

I worked at a gas station in Iowa for a couple weeks, you can return cans for their deposit there. So a lot of the homeless collect cans across the border where there's no deposit, then walk back and cash them in to buy jerky and malt liquor.

I have a friend who compulsively gives the smallest bill he has on him to any homeless person.

Addicts, genuinely homeless, I don't really care. What was I going to do with that money anyway? Drop an appreciative buck for a kickin burrito that I swear is underpriced? I'll come up with another dollar for that somehow, I'm sure of it.

Still, I wouldn't call giving out a couple bucks helping, exactly. But if somebody sleeps in the park every night, I'll fund a beer or a burger or whatever they think will keep them going.

I try to give the homeless money here and there, but I work in NYC.....If you give money to every homeless person you pass there, you'll end up homeless yourself.

I give them money if they approach me. I don't really care what they do with the money...

I give change if I have it. There is a wide spectrum of homeless where I live, so not able to give a general answer on how I feel about them. The new trend I see is the "professional" homeless, they've got bicycles with trailers, ride around all day scavenging, collecting cans etc.

Sometimes I give the cash, and more often I don't. Homelessness and poverty are social issues that do affect me but the problems aren't gonna be solved with individual charity. Society needs to address these issues to ensure no one goes hungry/homeless. We have the capability.

A buck or some loose change, or food. One time I brought a bag of some food to a homeless person and he was picking and choosing what he wanted and handed the rest back to me..that confused me. But I always hope that if I am ever in that predicament there will be kind people who offer me some help.

I try to help as much as I can. If I do have a little bit of money to offer, I always give them around 1-10 bucks. And if I don't have anything, I do offer them a smile. I feel bad just ignoring people in general.

After a number of bad experiences with the homeless, I no longer try to help them. I can't tell who genuinely needs help and who doesn't anymore. I'll admit the homeless in LA are not nearly as bad as the homeless in SF but I usually just keep walking now.

If I DO decide to help, I no longer give money. I offer them food. A surprising number have refused since they clearly just want the money so I don't really even do that anymore. There was one time when I went into a nearby restaurant to buy food as per the guy's request and when I came out, he had fled and was gone. Goes to show how a few idiots can really ruin things for everyone.

Oh well. I don't exactly have a lot to spare, anyway.

I've never been to LA, so I have no comment on experiences with them. However, if I'm carrying anything I give what I can. Its sorry that people lose perspective on what they must be going through, and even if they use it for the wrong ends (booze, etc) it could be improving someone's spirits for a time, or feeding them. Not everyone agrees with me, but it could be you.
