KyoAni has become very well known for spectacular art and animation and their very distinctive “slice-of-life” style series. Beyond the Boundary is a bit of a departure for them, in that it is an effective blend of their typical slice-of-life and supernatural action. It’s full of likeable characters, absolutely beautiful art, and an intriguing story.

Kanbara Akihito is an immortal half-youmu (spirit creature) who saves his schoolmate, Kuriyama Mirai from jumping off their school’s roof, only to have her stab him through the heart with a sword made of her blood. She is a Spirit World Warrior from a cursed clan who is hated by pretty much everyone. The two become friends over time as Akihito helps Mirai with her fear of killing youmu and getting close to people.

From there the story goes into the reasons for Mirai’s hesitance at killing and a bit into Akihito’s past, as well as bringing in several other characters to provide substance and comic relief in fairly equal parts. From Akihito’s Literary Club president Mitsuki and her derpy brother Hiromi, to the youmu sisters Ayaka and Ai, Mirai is able to find people who will accept her. Unsurprisingly, a romance slowly begins to bloom between Akihito and Mirai as well.

There are a few things that really make this show stand out to me. The amount of detail in some of the movements of the characters is amazing, and the animation and art overall are just breathtaking. The characters all have their own quirks, such as Akihito’s obsession with glasses, Hiromi’s obsession with little sisters, Mirai’s clumsiness, and Mitsuki’s comedic sadism, which really add flavor to every episode.

Beyond the Boundary is an addictive blend of exciting action choreography, incredible art and animation, fun characters, an interesting story, beautiful music, touching moments, and a strong sense of humor, that really needs a second season. It’ll be tough not to take out the whole series in one sitting, but make sure to check out Beyond the Boundary!

Oh my God yes, this series was everything and more. So beautiful. It deserves a second series more than half of the anime I've seen with a second series!!
