Not always the case but there are certainly some instances where I can agree with the topic.

Below are some examples of where I liked the first opening more, followed by one where I prefer the second, and finally a case where I liked the first two equally:

Fate/Zero and Sword Art Online - I prefer the first opening over the second no contest (Oath Sign and Crossing Field, respectively, sung by LiSA)

Shingeki no Kyojin - In this case I actually prefer the second opening (but only very slightly). In terms of the visuals, I found that the editing of the sequences shown during the opening to have a better fit compared to the first.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - The series had 4 openings, if I recall correctly, but I'm only referring to the first two --- Again by Yui and Hologram by Nico Touches the Walls. I can't say I like one over the other as I find both songs to be very good.

TWGOK2 > TWGOK1 in everything, not just OP

I definitely agree with you. For me TWGOKs openings just got better & better each time. OP 3 was just amazing.

I wouldnt necessarily say its true that first openings are always better. Some examples personally I can think of where the 2nd opening was better in my opinion would be AOT (I loved the first opening but the vibe I got from the 2nd one was a lot more powerful I thought) and Guilty Crown as well. My Dearest was fantastic but The Everlasting has to be one of the best anime opening songs Ive ever heard.

But there were also occasions where I preferred the first openings too, e.g. Mirrai Nikki. So I dont really think that first openings are better, perhaps people just dont like change aha?

Shingeki no Kyojin and Fairy Tail are good examples of the first op being better but Phi Brain and Gintama are good counter examples so I don't think that statement is always true

Brotherhood had 5 openings actually. I love all of them, too.

I agree with Attack on Titan's second one being the better one. That seems like the heretic thing to say, but I just like how it transitions, and the visuals for the most part are better, imo. And it doesn't cut corners by slapping images from the manga on the screen, either. Both have that irksome bad cgi, though......

I actually didn't like opening #2 right away. When I first saw / heard it I immediately told my brother that I preferred opening #1. The more I heard the song and saw the intro, however, it began to grow on me. Now, of course, I prefer it over opening #1.

After the opening to Jiyuu no Tsubasa, the stellar combination of choral vocals and guitars just makes me feel as badass as Levi Gives me an adrenaline rush.

Usually I would agree. I do think the Second Psycho- Pass opening is better than the first by a very wide margin.

Not hugely there are a lot of series where future openings are way superior to the original. Eureka Seven had some great openings after the first one which was kinda so so. I think with some things like Dragonball and One Piece other openings have been better but the original openings are very iconic themselves.

I usually prefer second ones. The first one is often more iconic, but I don't care about that.

I find this is true most of the time but also its the first one we hear when we watch the show so we tend to grow and love it

Attack on titans second one grew on me but I do agree almost always the first OP is better.

I just watched the first episode of SYD season 2, and I'll probably say it's an exception, since I like this season's OP better than last season's.

I think one big thing I got from everyone's replies is that 'better' is really subjective. For example, I really liked Psycho-Pass' and AoT's first OP's, and thought the 2nd OP's were great, but not as great as the first OP's. Some people think the opposite.

Also, rather than 'better', would you say the first OP of a series sticks more to memory? I mean, especially for anime, the OP sequences do leave a lot of impression on the viewer (granted they watch through it).

I don't think you could make it an absolute rule, but generally, I agree. Definitely true from personal experience.

And then there are those shows that just don't have good OPs at all...

This pretty much holds true for me, too.

I've got a feeling my only exception would be Strike Witches, but it's been a while since I've seen that
