Or are you saying Crunchyroll should have held the simulpub until after they got the catalog titles prepared? I'm not clear on what the benefit is of not having the simulpub up for however long that takes.

Everyone interested in it here is going to have to go somewhere ELSE to start reading it, ....

Or wait until the catalog is up ... remember that not all Crunchyroll members are going to bother with bootleg sites.

CR should have announced when they had at least the first few volumes done. Without them, this announcement is only an advertisement for most people to visit bootleg sites and read these mangas. Heck, I've already read Inside Mari that I knew nothing of because of this.

You've got three groups of people. Those who (1) are already reading the manga on the bootleg sites, those who (2) are so used to the various PITA aspects of those sites they are willing to go there to read but just were not aware of these series, and those who (3) either for convenience or ethics don't bother with those bootleg sites. Call them (1), (2) and (3).

Strategy A. Put up the series as soon as available.
A.1: You get all of (1) who prefer the convenience of CR, and that's all of those you are going to get anyway.
A.2: They run off to read the bootleg catalog, then come back to CR for the simulpub, so you get a steady from from (2) as they finish the series
A.3: They mostly wait until the catalog comes up.

Strategy B. Put up the series once you have materials for a "certain number" of back catalog titles and translations finished
B.1: You lost all of (1) for the simulpub as long as you wait.
B.2: You lose all of (2) for the simulpub as long as you way, you get (2) for the back catalog you put up, then they go to the bootleg sites to finish and then come back to the simulpub
B.3: They are the same as before.

So the question is whether undermining the bootleg audience for the new releases is more important or undermining the bootleg audience for the catalog. Because strategy A is better at undermining the bootleg audience for the new releases, and strategy B is better at undermining the bootleg audience for the catalog.

Crunchyroll's strategy says undermining the new release bootleg audience is more important. Given Crunchyroll's growth performance in the streaming anime market, where that is exactly the strategy that they use, I would hesitate to say they are wrong about that.

I've been reading Inside Mari since the scanlation started, so I don't really care about the lack of earlier chapters. But now that they have it day-and-date with Japan, there's no reason for me to bother with the scanlation anymore, so they've won.

It's a different issue with Coppelion and Space Bros, though, where even the scanlations aren't up to date and there's a huge gap that no one can read unless they know Japanese. For those series, I think CR really needs to do a two-track translation, with a new chapter of the older material coming out every week or two so people aren't left hanging with no idea when an update's coming.

On a side note, I notice all these titles are from Futabasha, so it seems we're no longer limited strictly to Kodansha titles.

I'm excited. I've read a lot of manga, like a lot. But I've never heard these titles before, looks interesting!

The problem with saying at a later date is we have no idea when that will be. It could be next week, month, year. There's no specific time frame at all, just later.

They said they would work on getting back chapters to the manga already released on here but we haven't heard anything yet.

While there are still some back-catalog chapters missing, there have actually been some back-catalog chapters added since the manga first went up--so, they really are working on it. Just not as fast as some would like (and I'm a little bit in that camp. I will be very, very happy when the missing chapters of Mysterious Girlfriend X show up!

This is kinda disappointing its not the whole series just simuilpub i wish we could get the whole series and not have missing chapters

sadly, I have to agree with this. I've never met someone who was willing to start at chapter 8 of a book. This is just like that. >.< sorry CR this is a miss for me, which sucks, because I'm sure they're great reads. *cry*

I think of reading the manga whose back catalogs aren't up yet as like... picking up a manga magazine in Japan and noticing a series you hadn't heard of before, or turning on the TV and seeing an episode of a series you'd never watched before. There might not be a published volume or DVDs out yet to catch up on the whole story... it's not like you can always start something from the very beginning.

It's not quite the same as starting in the middle of a novel, IMO. These manga are originally drawn to be serialized. You'll notice that some manga seem to restate things again and again for readers who are just coming in to the series or readers who missed the last magazine, or just because it's been so long since the chapter, etc. Like in Coppelion, sometimes it feels like they repeat things a lot, but it's really that the author is summing up the situation a bit in the beginning of each chapter because there's only one chapter of it in each issue of its magazine.

But I guess it's a YMMV situation. If the earlier chapters were up, I'd start reading from the beginning, too.

Anyway, Inside Mari is the manga I'm most interested in out of this batch of series.

(Remember Tokyopop's "100% authentic" manga push, way back when? You could say this is a pretty authentic experience!)

Very good news! I remember hearing about Inside Mari, so I'm very glad these are getting released. Also, thank you CR for not waiting until the back-catalog chapters are finished, I applaud your sensibility. You might want to bold, underline, and strobe the part that says those will be uploaded when completed.

It's not a question of bother, it's a question of supporting the media. The only way we are going to get a better selection of manga titles on Crunchyroll is if people read the ones we have now.

Silver Nina sounds really interesting and maybe Inside Mari (A stalker romance? I dunno) but what is with offering only parts of a manga series? It's like paying for a half eaten apple from the grocery store.

1. The obvious thing to do for older chapters is read scanlations. We're lucky to have them, and without the thousands of hours of scanlations I doubt that a large English-speaking audience for manga

2. I pray that, if Crunchyroll IS having to take less well known manga to start, it keeps on having them. If you're alert and read em, you'll see that the less well known ones are often the best, and especially often the smartest. I saw several manga on now-defunct Jmanga that were not wildly popular in Japan and certainly wouldn't have been here, but were wonderful.

Awesome, the first two volumes for Inside Mari are up now. That was fast.

It would be nice if there were a forum thread or something for announcing when new volumes are added to the back catalog.
