so recently I stumbled across this as I window shop through Drivethru RPG

Maid- the RPG
http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/124551/Maid-The-Role-Playing-Game?manufacturers_id=5788

From what I understand so far the game was originally released in Japan and is now getting an English release. I've read a few reviews already some positive and some negative

This might be a long shot but I was hoping someone around here might have some experience with the game and can tell me what it's like.

hey this was actually available since a few years ago (i bought this at the first PAX East Boston).

Sadly i cannot comment on what a full game of it would be like since i've never been able to get friends together to actually try it out.

I have though read through the book. and I can tell you that its very very free form and comedy based. basically the DM will set himself up as the "master" of some kind of a scenario mansion or something, and then the players will all create various maid characters (i have read there is a variation of butler if you're so inclined to make a Hayate No Gotoku clone scenario haha) that they will play as. the book suggests various factors that decide what kind of master and maid you are, and suggest various random scenarios for your mansion or some kind of adventure or event. needless to say most of these suggestions are ludicrous. and basically the book suggests you write some kind of ridiculous scenario and have the maids try to go through their thing with the master going through his thing, and the master gives the maids/players like Heart or Love points or something based off of how awesome the master/DM thought the last skit was. so say like, the master wants to be served tea and his 3 maids set up tea, cake, and cookies, and then like some random stuff happens like a dinosaur from a parallel universe explodes through the roof and then starts destroying the masters dining room, and then based on what how the maid players deal with this event, the master/DM rewards the most awesome acting maid with Love or whatever points. i would reward the maid who can discover the hidden hot spring under the mansion and becomes a bestselling novelist who is actually a 14 year old part time model. and so forth and so forth. there seems to be no "winner" or "loser" in the play, it seems to suggest prioritizing being entertaining and having fun.

the scenario i came up with is actually really tame compared to what the book can generate if you use some of its suggestions and use your own imagination. needless to say, this game will NOT be fun if you do not play it with the right people. i think the intro of the book actually mentioned something like that; that you'll have to find an equal lot of funny people who love japanese culture and maids, who are willing to role play like ninja robot maids with split personalities in order to enjoy this game.

I seriously regret that i no longer have a social circle that would play D&D (or Tunnels & Trolls) much less something insane as Maid. I recommend buying the book and forcing it on your friends if they're so inclined though!

cheers!

I've, luckily enough, actually run this game for my friends before. To skim over a lot, it ended up with an angel princess with a chainsaw, a sexy vampire and a ninja in a three-way battle with space pirates and a giant cat head that fired lasers. It's that kind of game.

The game really lends itself to improv and throwing out anime references that everyone will get. If you've got a couple of friends that have a good sense of humor and want to kill a few hours, it's great. That said, it's not very good for rules lawyers and number crunchers, as it's fairly light on hard rules (the master is encouraged to have stuff happen "just because it's fun"). Plus, in my opinion, it's not all that well suited for long campaigns.

But all things considered, it's probably the best $6 I've ever spent; and I always have a notebook with about a dozen characters (it's super easy to make a char) ready to go at pretty much all times in case a game breaks out.

Haven't read it but tempted to buy...

Just added it to my shopping list on my new account along with $50 worth of Cyberpunk 2020

Thanks.

Well it was only $6 and it sounds like fun so I've picked it up along with a game called Fight! which is about RPing Arcade fighting games like Street Fighter or Mortal Combat.

Giving it a quick read through and it's already looking pretty fun.

Thanks for the input folks
