Is this a forum topic I am not sure.
When coming across with the word moe most would probably think this.

A cute girl with huge eyes, but is there more to this 'moe'? Why do people like characters that are drawn like this? It isn't something that isn't popular I mean look at most anime and at least one of the character(s) is drawn like this. Is moe just a way of life or maybe just something that brings enjoyment to someone. If we go with the 'brings enjoyment to someone' doesn't everything count as moe? How does one even pronounce moe? Mo-eh or Mow?

But really CR user what is 'moe' to you?

I have no clue what the heck is moe. People just use it. 4chans started moe first, so its a better to ask where the origin came from.

I've never fully understood the term "Moe"...

From my understanding, it's the anime equivalent of a "fetish" or something. A western analogy would be... ok so you know how we find librarians usually unsexy? Well sometimes they can be sexy if you have a fetish for people who wear glasses and proper clothing.

And I suppose that's what Moe means in anime; like suddenly a hot character wears glasses and everybody finds them hot, when in reality, glasses are usually considered ugly on people.

If you'd like a somewhat lengthy (but greatly entertaining) discourse on the matter:

PodTaku - Episode 12: The Mathematics of Moe.

I believe that was the birthplace of the line "Moe is when your heart gets a boner" but I could be mistaken.

When a character is so adorable you just instinctively want to protect them, yet at the same time nearly hug them to death. This feeling can also be accompanied by a clutching of the heart and a "HNNNNNNGGG!" noise.

At least that's what it always seemed like to me.

I think 'moe' used to mean something along the lines of what Eibzz described, but now the term gets thrown around in so many different situations that I feel it's lost most of its meaning. What used to refer to one specific type of thing can now mean one of about 100 different things depending on who you ask; it could refer to any girl in a slice-of-life anime, any girl who wears glasses, a girl who behaves in one of a few different ways, a girl whose voice is a certain pitch, a short girl, a girl who has two radically different patterns of behavior ("gap moe"), etc. It just depends on who you ask.

The most important thing to realize is that moe is an emotion, not a category. It's generally defined by the feeling or desire to protect something you see as being innocent, naive, or helpless. The simplest way to elicit this response in a western individual is to show them a bunch of cute pictures of sad, lonely kittens on tumblr.

This is separate from categorical "moe" terms, such as:

Character Designs:

Personality Types:

... and the Genre:

The first two can be used to elicit a feeling of moe, but they can also be used subversively, or simply indiscriminately, while the genre is the collection of anime that share moe appeal. As for where moe came from, I'm pretty sure it resulted from the Japanese idol culture as it has the same general feeling of cherishing a sort of exalted ideal of purity.

What's doubly interesting is when girls get "moed out" by somebody, two of the prime instigators being:

L, from Death Note:

... and Sousuke, from FMP:

At least those are the more mainstream ones I've heard about without knowing much of anything about shoujo series. Sousuke, because he's a lovable buffoon, and L, because his bouts with Kira leave you feeling like you want to protect him due to the sinking feeling that he'll get the short end of the stick. As well as their mutual romantic naivety.

In short,

... that's pretty much it, yeah.

If you would like to see moe deconstructed, I'd suggest episodes 12-15 and 21-26 of Monogatari 2nd Season.

That is a really pretty post. "LAWL"

My definition of moe is something heavily exploited to make money in the current Anime economy. I wouldn't say that it's a needless trait, but I think things could be done without too much of pantsu, spit stringing, and the like. I like tits as much as the next guy, but does it have to be bodaciously zero gravity bouncing like that for a normal walking stride? Also, do we really need an underage flat girl that does something obscure and adorable somewhere in the picture every time? Glasses, pass.

HNNNNNNNNNNG? The diabetic effects of such characters on me has been so diluted so much with the moe oversaturated market.

(I'm probably confusing "moe" and "fanservice" again, but the two have a direct relationship. "WHATEVS_LAWL")
