I still haven't finished Ni No Kuni. Honestly, it was quite boring to me. A lot of the story was definitely geared towards children. Plus, the AI for your allies was utterly brain dead. =\

While not an RPG, I am excited for Mirrors Edge 2. The first was great.

I'm like level 20 in Ni No Kuni and am so utterly bored with it. The music is amazing, the art is phenomenal, the cutscenes are sharp and what I would expect from Studio Ghibli, and the story seems to be touching and interesting so far. IT IS JUST SO REPETITIVE AND THE GAMEPLAY IS ASS. I can't bring myself to finish it. I'm playing Valkyria Chronicles instead.

Yeah, I suspect that people that praise the game do so because of the good things you listed. But, that's not good enough for me. If the game isn't actually fun to play then I can't enjoy myself. If I just wanted the great animation and story aspect then I'd watch a Ghibli movie. So, they were kind of wasted here in my opinion.

It's hard to find good RPG's these days. The PS1 era was truly the golden age of RPG's. It's when I first got into them and I spent so much time just jumping from one RPG to the next, easily dumping 40, 60, 100 hours into them. I miss those days.

Yeah, a good RPG these days is really rare. And by that I mean the traditional JRPG sense of the word. I don't mean your Fallouts and your Elder Scrolls IV and V. I mean games that have turn based combat, or ATB whatever, levels, skills, and upgrading equipment. I love what America did with the RPG genre (Looking at you Bethesda, CD Projekt RED, and Bioware), but finding good JRPGS is tough. Haven't really played any good JRPGS recently outside of Persona, Fire Emblem, Tales, and Valkyria Chronicles.

I've actually really liked what Western RPG's have done over the years. JRPG's have kind of fallen behind the times. Case in point, Final Fantasy. That series is god awful now. Oh and CD Projeckt Red is actually from Europe, so not a North American company there. But, yeah, The Witcher series is the best thing to come to RPG's in years. I actually enjoyed Skyrim, especially the Dragonborn DLC, but we're kind of stuck with it for probably 2 or 3 more years which is how The Elder Scrolls series goes. Luckily, or maybe unluckily, Elder Scrolls Online comes out in a couple of months which I do intend on playing.

I used to love the classic JRPG's, but these days the recipe has gotten fairly stale. Most of them have terrible stories with unmemorable characters that I can't connect with. Thus, my preference for WRPG's, which tend to be more mature and far more interesting to me.
