Can anyone enlighten me as to why in all the anime I watch they always list S or SS as the top/premiere ranking as opposed to A?
It's always like this.... SS > S > A > B > C > etc. Some common examples: S-Class wizards in FairyTail S Ranked missions in Naruto SS & S ranked cards in Hunter x Hunter (Greed Island) Also, in Korea, Starcraft 2's premiere league is "Code S" So.......is there something I don't know about "S" that makes it so special? |

I have always assumed, "S" stood for something like super. Never really thought about it. |

I always thought it was just the highest rank in everything, even if you look at video games like Devil May Cry the highest ranks are SSS, SS and S

It's been like that for a long time, especially in fighting games.

It's a weird trend. For Starcraft 2, GM (Grandmaster) is the highest ranking on ladder rather than "S".

Originally created in Japan where anything below grade ‘C’ was considered a failure. The 'S-Rank' allowed for a wider range of obtainable grades and thus player motivation, meaning that it was soon adopted by western developers who realized that the ‘S-Rank’ was much cooler than the boring ‘A’. An A rank is commonly obtained by getting a 90% to 95%. If the player is flawless or achieves perfection in something, it qualifies as an S . Many people have wondered what the S stands for… Special? Super? No one knows for sure. - Giant Bomb
This is the closest I could find about why it's like that. Hey if it applies to video games, then I'm sure it applies to anime/manga as well right? |

S usually stands for Special. It's usually supposed to be something that is so awesome that it doesn't fit in tradition ranks.
And you're forgetting the best example of the S rank. S-rank Zettai Ryouiki. |

Like pistolsaf, I always assumed "S" stands for "Special."

S applies to mages who are great in Nanoha.
Except SS on Hayate means, "I'm a nuke." |

That ranking has been there for as long as I know. I always wonder what SS stands for. If S means Special, then SS means Super Special?

SSS is the best grade you can get in the games Devil May Cry too.
S = Super maybe? Well in DmC: Devil May Cry (5) S stands for Sadistic. |
