I consider it retro, but I don't consider it obsolete by any means. It is anything but obsolete, even though I haven't played PSP for nearly 2 years.

New games come out for the PSP quite frequently in Japan. Far from retro, it was last generation. By that logic, the PS3 and Xbox 360 are retro also.

No I don't think it is. For me it has to be 15+ years to be retro.

I can't consider a console "retro" as long as a) games are still being developed for the console and b) the console itself is still being manufactured. As thus, I can't deem the PSP "retro", seeing as the handheld continues to meet both aforementioned conditions.

But the PSP isn't being manufactured anymore. At least not by Sony-proper. Even some old hardware are still being made under contract in places like India and Latin America. Games however are.

Yeah, you're right. It looks like shipments of the PSP were discontinued as of January 2014 for NA and June 2014 for Japan and will be discontinued for EU regions by the end of the year, which means they only recently stopped manufacturing the handheld. Regardless, games are still being developed for it (mostly in Japan), which still disqualifies it from being a "retro" console according to my personal definition of the word.

No it is not retro. It is only one generation old. Also they still sell new PSP games in stores. In order for a game system to be considered retro, there mustn't be any sales of its games outside of used game stores. GBA and Gamecube I would consider retro, because it is impossible to find new GBA and Gamecube games being sold in stores anymore.

No, I've only recently started to think of the N64 and original Playstation as retro so the PSP has a very long way to go for me still. It's difficult to say what exactly factors into it but it's just a mental trigger somewhere in my brain that goes click when it's time to call it retro. I think it has to do with how long your history with games and consoles are, the longer it gets the more time has to pass before I consider it retro.

At this point, I feel the GBA is - but the PSP? Nope.
