Hi guys. First of all thanks for any opinions and replies. And please bear with my rambling, there is a question here.

So I'm not really NEW to anime as much as I am unversed in anime.

I have watched anime for several years, since high school in 1998 (I'm 31 now) however, I have never really taken the chance to broaden my horizons. I've seen Dragonball, Dragonball Z like everyone else of course, I got started on Akira; Trigun, Samurai Shamploo, Inuyasha, etc (adult swim) anime followed that. I watch Naruto, miss Fairy Tail so so much, and I'm looking for more. What I don't know is what I'll like. So I'm asking you, the community to help me with that.

I can tell you what's important to me personally in an anime, please don't judge too harshly this is what I look for personally, I'm not saying this is what makes anime good or bad.

So for me to get into an anime I need good animation for starters. Like my friends tell me I would love One Piece, but I haven't gotten past the first couple because the art drives me crazy. I know, I know I'm sorry. The second, or rather something equally important to me is I like repeat characters you can learn to love. If I cannot get into characters I cannot get into the anime. Really those are the two things that matter most to me.

So my question:

What can you, the community, recommend to someone who is looking for an anime that's

A: currently running, or coming back soon
B: has characters you can get behind and cheer for
C: has decent or modern (again I know I'm sorry) art / animation

I'll watch anything that has those three but if it helps I love Naruto and Fairy Tail, I loved Trigun, I am liking Sword Art Online, loved Princess Monoke, Bleach. Inuyasha annoyed me but I think that was main characters fault. Plural, not just Inuyasha. My favorite genre is fantasy, I love swords and magic etc. I dislike power at an asinine level (I could NEVER go back and re-watch DBZ) I also like funny silliness if not fantasy and / or action. Loved Love Hina, I love Pet Girl of Sakarosu, stuff like that. So now that I'm done rambling if you managed to make it this far without falling asleep and forehead smashing your keyboard, what should I watch??

Again, any current action and or fantasy, silly love comedy stuff. Thanks again CR community! Help me expand my anime fandom!

I came for my 4 points, and received by 4 points. It is nothing unusual about missing the stickies.

I recommend

1.Angel beats

2. Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Angel beats was huge when it came out and if you haven't watched Puella Magi Madoka Magica it was the best selling anime movie in japan and one of the few that got shown in the usa theaters both are on crunchyroll

It's by guy who wrote Fate/Zero, so the chances are pretty good. It's harsh as hell at any rate. You listed mostly longer, well-known shounen in your post, so it might be a change of pace. But it's still incredibly good in all respects.

But it also IS a deconstruction, so if it doesn't grab you right now don't force yourself. It's not going to go anywhere.

PS: If you haven't seen it, I'd also recommend Fate/Zero.

Hunter x Hunter should probably be on your best bet list it's got just about everything you are asking for, though they don't get into the super power stuff for a good while.

Magi is another one that is probably right up your alley

Madoka is good but it is also very different from the norm and you might find it a bit weird. It's a fantastic series just ..... very different.

One of the things I've told other people is look at the Shows tab and sort by popular. Anything that is near the top of that list and isn't currently being simulcast is worth checking out.

giving it a quick look myself right now - Reborn, Blue Exorcist, Eyeshield 21, Beelzebub are all good options

Heh heh, is all good. Your tastes sound similar to mine. I will start crunchyroll recommendations.

I found Attack on Titan to be quite invigorating for the returning anime buff. Highly recommend it. It is a violent show, but is actually tastefully done.

Arpeggio of Blue Steel - is a pretty decent short run action flick.

Blue Exorsist - is the show I am currently watching, bit of comedy, lots of action, quite enjoying.

Log Horizon - is a show a great many of us enjoy currently in simulcast. It start off seeming generic, but is quite enjoyable with lively cast.

Girl Und Panzer - If you want a feel-good show with a little bit of action, this show fits the bill. Really is is one of those friendship series... with WW2 tank action....

And that is my top five for crunchyroll. If you are also interested in similar outside of crunchyroll, send a shout!

It happens frequently, your post was rather long anyhow so it'll attract some attention.

You've got to widen your horizons man, not every show is always always always airing, you have to check out the full breath of shows.

I'll suggest to you HunterXHunter and Magi, those are two show's you're sure to like and do follow all the requirements. HunterXHunter is just past 100 episodes, but looks like it will end within the next 20, due to the Manga having 1 more arc and well, "Sorta ending" in a year long Hiatus kind of way.
Magi is half way through it's second season, and is a great series regardless. You're bound to have fun, the one problem is they could have stretched the series out for 4 seasons Fairy Tale style by now, but they didn't, because A-1 Pictures doesn't have time to waste and they're going to tell a proper story, AND GOOD ONE ON THEM.

I'll suggest a few hard balls that you might have seen from time to time.

Samurai 7 is great, I've never seen it on Adult Swim or Toonami, but I know other channels carry it, and I've seen it aired a bunch. You're bound to like it.

The Slayers - is a 90's Fantasy Comedy anime, with some really epic stories to tell. It's got 4 Seasons and you can watch all of them on Hulu in sub's, Netflix in dub's, and if you're willing to buy before you watch the Box Set for the first 3 seasons of 26 so 26x3 = 78 Episodes of enjoyment. The 4th Season is also on Streaming sites but comes with it's own DVD sets.....
Those original 3 seasons for $45 however, probably the most worth it box set I ever bought. I didn't even like Season 3, but Seasons 1 and 2 are a STEAL at that price.

Soul Eater is a good one. The anime ends way to early they say, but you've got a good 51 episodes in that.

Next on action, make sure you check out the prominent Mecha anime. Neon Genesis Evangelion, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and Code Geass.

As well if you REALLY want to sink your teeth in, altho I suspect you'll be far more into Anime before you try this, check out the older animes like Fist of the North Star, and Mobile Suit Gundam(1979) They're amazing pieces and it took me years to get around to watching them.

LAST. Berserk. This one is so great, it's name is in red and they just had a 3 movie series that re-animated the entire Anime. Watch the original 24 Episode anime, and watch it in English. The Japanese cast really failed that first time around, like damn dude. I've talked to people who've only seen the Subs of Berserk, they disliked the show. Something about how actors can't decide how to say peoples name. I mean is the Protaganists name Guts? Gats? Gatsu? IT'S GUTS, IGNORE THE STUPID JAPANESE VOICE ACTORS AND FAN TRANSLATED MANGA'S. HIS NAME IS GUTS, LIKE THE THING THE YOU GET PUNCHED IN RIGHT BELOW YOUR CHEST.

Yeah, Berserk is an amazing anime, and is Dark Fantasy personified.

oh, and Record of Lodoss Wars, that one is High Fantasy just like The Slayers, and they're good watches.

I second this suggestion for AoT. It was one of the series to get me back full force.

There's Black Lagoon too. That should be mentioned just for its OP/ED sequences and general awesomeness.
