Nagi no Asukara (2nd cour, episode 14 was amazing), won't say anything so as not to spoil but amazing

I didn't include continuations as I thought it unfair to compare something in the middle of the series to something setting the scene at the start, but if I had that would be my top as well.

I made an exception JUST because I had to mention that one!

Otherwise usually in fact it is the 2nd cours at a disadvantage, how can you expect an episode in the middle of a series to compete with openers? This time, it certainly competed and even won I think.

When you're in the middle of the series you understand the setting and what's going on, and have been able to get to know and grow attached to the characters, and used to any oddities the series might have. Also, most series either stay consistent in terms of emotional impact and story, or build up over time. Those series that start with a big wham in the first episode are few and far between, especially those that do it effectively. Even when it is done effectively the impact is usually just that it puts people off - look at Kotoura-san, or Suisei no Gargantia, for example; in both cases the most common criticism while the series aired was from episodes 2 onwards when they didn't live up to the expectations set by the impact of the strong first episode.

And Space Dandy in episode 2, just too stupid, not funny enough, not enough of an overarching plot or character story to hold my interest.

I didn't even make it to episode 2. the first episode just struck all the wrong chords. I thought I had to watch it with all the hype it got, all the people screaming about how this series was going to be amazing.. how it would save anime (don't know how anime needs saving, but whatever...) all that rot.

it just turned out to be a bad gag anime full of fan service and bad music.

Agreed, sadly people keep telling me this is the anime they made for the west. I don't know if that is true but if it is then I'm very very sad for what Japan thinks of the tastes of western people... no offense to people who like it intended but if this is true then I must say I prefer shows intended for the native audience.

A lot of anime I've watched for Winter 2014 seem templated. There doesn't seem to be any unique character or storyline. Feels so borrowed.

Even the randomness in Hozuki no Reitetsu seems formulated. I expected great things from this anime after reading the description, but after watching the first episode, I was not impressed. The only thing that made me laugh was the goldfish plant.

The Pilot's Love Song was somewhat entertaining but the story and characters are so straightforward, there's no sense of mystery or anything. It has a chance to redeem itself with more episodes... I do like the sense of adventure in this anime and the idea of a floating island.
