Whaaat?

OK ok.

Easily, .Hack/Sign. That show displayed the first ending I ever hated, and I really mean hated. Not all anime have a precise ending, but this one did and it was horrible.

Going off a few anime I randomly saw, my brother and I used to check out niche/forgotten titles among the ranks, and I don't remember their names but I do know they were horrible piles of crap. One involved loli-super heroes who became giant to fight giant penis related monsters, and they got stronger the more they fought because their clothes melted away as they fought. It was absurd.

Next up, we have an classic 2-girl romance. Where the main lead is an awesome, super cool, nice guy who's tormented by his evil super-star older sister, and he has the childhood friend and the forgotten child hood friend as his love interests. The one problem is he forgot about both of them....because HOLY SHIT ONE IS A VAMPIRE THE OTHER IS A WEREWOLF!
Like, i did not see that shit coming, and they only said it in the finale

Then we have Solty Rei, that one was rather good...but limited. I remember watching the ending and saying "well, that happened" and I said the same thing with Speed Grapher. They were odd titles, but I liked them.

Those were my first entry into the deeper, less awesome side of anime. The mediocre side.

and that made me think of Anime not as well, a Genre, but as a form of media.

Steins;Gate...

and Space Bros (Uchuu Kyoudai).

It's hard to explain what changed about my outlook on anime; whatever it was, it was for the better.

Let's see...

Akira changed my perception of anime, in that it could be brutal and for adults.

Grave of the Fireflies changed my perception on just how emotionally jarring an anime could be.

Lovely Complex changed my perception that the only good anime were animes they directed at males. It really opened up the door for me to start enjoying Rom-Com animes.

Now and Then, Here and There changed my perception that illustration type determined story type, in that cutesy drawn anime can be brutal and vicious.

Oh, and One Piece changed my habit of dropping animes immediately. Some can just be slow starters.

Serial Experiments Lain. Before i watched this all the anime i saw was mostly about boobs and gore or just Shonen action stuff so when i saw something so brilliantly written and deep it changed my taste in anime forever. I realised anime can be more than just violent cartoons and it can produce some brilliant and thought provoking animation. It's a story that looks at ideas from spirituality philosophy and science and asks many questions without just trying to force any answers on you. It also was very ahead of it's time coming out in 1998 it even predicted how quickly the internet and computers would advance and how important they would become to our lives and culture.

This great AMV kind of shows the mood of the series. Very surreal and dark.

Ultimate Girls

You left out the part about the transformation involving being sprayed with a white liquid.

It is a good thing you found it to be absurd because that was what was intended.

So Clannad: After Story. Before i watched clannad anime was kind of just a side thing, but when i started that i found myself hooked. It even made me cry for about two hours straight. After that I just want to find another anime that can make me feel those feels again. It really made me think, "Holy crap, anime can be pretty deep."

True, it wasn't the worst of shows, but easily one of the most absurd.

Hehe, pulling the magical rod I remember, the white liquid I forgot.

This AMV: √Bestamvsofalltime ▪ The Last Chapter AMV.

Chrno Crusade isn't particularly great, but that video still managed to crack my shell and start looking for other things.

Fullmetal Alchemist... although I actually haven't seen the anime, I know that FMA:B is really close to the manga. I didn't know anime/manga could actually have plot and character development WITH good comedy. The other actual anime would be Code Geass.

I am pretty new to anime and the first episode of an anime that made me realize "hey anime isn't as bad as a lot of people say it is" was Free. I know it's kind of a weird first anime to watch but my sister told me to watch it and I had no idea really what to expect going into because I've never seen anime. However, I loved the character interaction in it and it made me want to see more anime with much better plot. It's what inspired to me to discover incredible shows that I love.
