1: Anything in the Touhou Series (Bullet Hell Shooter)
2: Starcraft (1 and 2)

I do not play many personal computer games, but my favorite three are Team Fortress 2, Eden Eternal and Left 4 Dead 2. My laptop is five years old and only has two gigabytes worth of memory on it. I should not play any games on it, but I do anyway in my leisure time. Luckily I got Team Fortress 2 to play somewhat smoothly on this.

Nearly every suggestion has been crap, or something that's on console. WTF.

Here, go get Deus Ex, the first one. Will piss you off that it is still loads better than most games today.

Next rec is the STALKER series. It's everything fallout wanted to be, and more. It's actually more survival horror. You have to eat to not die and repair weapons, no one cares about you, lots of monsters. Freaking depressing atmosphere. Can run on a toaster.

Bastion and Torchlight 2 are also good choices but I'm gonna say Mount & Blade Warband.
That's an experience you can't get on consoles right now, and I've put the most hours into it.
It's got an RPG level system, and you start all alone in a medieval land with 7 kingdoms vying for control. You can recruit followers to your warband. Each unit from each kingdom is different. The mongols have horse archers, swiss have spearmen, there's vikings and knights and warband introduces the camel guys.
And then you go off, do quests, you can raid villages, take over castles, sell prisoners, help someone be a king, claim kingship yourself, etc.
The amount of freedom is not found in consoles. Maybe never will be. I think it can put 100 guys on screen.

Since I can only rec three I'm gonna find a loophole and say to find the old bioware rpgs, because they are better than bioware is today.

In any order:
1. Team Fortress 2 - My favorite multiplayer fps, great characters, fun gameplay, had an active community for years now. My favorite game.
2. Garry's Mod - True definition of sandbox. You can do most of anything with a few addons, such as ragdoll posing, flying helicopters, etc.
3. Blockland - Build with Lego-like bricks and make cities to tdm servers. Has a neat brick eventing system.

Although they're not PC exclusive, the Batman: Arkham games (namely Asylum and City, haven't gotten around to Origins as of the time of this post) are damn near perfect. They nail down everything so well and if you didn't like the Caped Crusader before, then you will after playing these games. Batman is three things: a predator of criminals, the world's greatest detective, and a master hand-to-hand combatant. I don't think they could have represented any of those any more perfectly than they did. Calling them the 'best superhero games of all time' doesn't do them justice. They're some of the best damn games of all time, let alone ones to do with superheroes.

Also more typically associated with consoles, I really love the Devil May Cry series. Protagonists don't get cooler and more entertaining than Dante, and gameplay doesn't get more SSStylish than DMC. Particularly DMC3. I didn't hate the reboot, but it still doesn't measure up to the originals, especially not 3.

As for a story game, I really enjoyed Telltale's The Walking Dead. Never before has a story impacted me so greatly. Mass Effect (though also a great game) didn't come close to how powerful The Walking Dead was.

I remember when the first Heroes of Might & Magic came out. I was like "WTF IS THIS!? WHAT HAPPENED TO RPG???" then I found that it was similar in play as Warlords 1-3 and liked it. lol Admittedly, I never played any of the later installments, and same for Might & Magic, after the 6th installment went 3D.

But yeah, here's a list of games that's a definite must-play on PC (my opinion):
1. Descent: FreeSpace

2. Warcraft 2

3. SimCity 2000
