What's the point of burnouts? Really... other then trying to get your "race" tires nice and sticky for a drag race on a drag strip...

I personally hate burnouts, but thats just me.

To the best of my knowledge, its mostly for show...
As far as I'm aware of, it doesn't really provide any significant gains in takeoff time in racing applications.
But then again, I don't really race, so I'm not too knowledgeable on that.

On the track it is used to warm-up your tires for "stickiness". You get greater traction this way. Other than that it is mainly for show.

for show only, coz it would badly ruin the grip of your tires

Its good for the tires to burnout, but don't burnout too long maybe 20-30 seconds is enough to make the tires warm....as in racing before they run they zigzag around the track so the tires will be warm enough to stick at the pavement!

20-30 seconds?

Lmao, good luck having any rubber left. A few seconds is long enough to warm up the rubber. Haven't you ever been to the track?

Doing burnouts increases the heat of your tires which expands the air in your tires.. its only done for the old muscle cars because they have such thick/wide rear wheel tires.

It's not really required for cars now just because they use the same PCD on the rear as they do front.. or atleast relatively close.

If you look at all those old tires, you notice they are bald (no tread)

what???

PCD? you know what that stands for right??
Pitch Center Diameter also known as the size of your lug patterns..

like my s13 is 5x114.3
my s14 at the moment is a 4 lug so thats 4x114.3
my z is 5x114.3
honda civic = 4x100
(that is why you cant fit honda wheels on nissans)
there are few exceptions (honda accord and s2000) i think...

you realize the op actually said it already?
And the camaro have what I believe to be called "slick" tires. They uses them for circuit racing...

anyway, burnouts are a waste of tires, but it gets you pussy.

LOL!! ok... racing slicks are called that way cause they dont have the ridges of whatever with the wheels.. now with racing slicks and you burn them out they get warm and thus having better grip on the road. if you dont burnout you dont really get to achieve the highest efficiency of the wheels and need to wait for a few turns to achive this grip

OMG.. So many of you guys dont even know what you are talking about. Doing burnouts are only benificial to drag radials and slicks. They are made of softer compounds that will actually become softer and stickier as they are warmed up. For street tires they are useless and do absolutely nothing as street tires are not designed to become softer or sticker. Many studies have showed this. You only need to do a very light burnout only 2-3 seconds. As soon as you see the first sign of smoke you will know your tires are good. Unless you go to the track you should even say anything about burnouts doing nothing. And less air in your tires equal more traction. But too little air will be detrimental.
