Yes well, I had a feeling you might have read those from your post and it was for the benefit of anyone else who'd like to know.

The media is doing it regardless of intent. The media's job is to craft and perpetuate ignorance, not prevent it. They purposefully hype up terror scares and instigate racially (and religiously) predicated controversies.

The media's job is to sell advertising, which requires getting the most readers, viewers or listeners to check out their content. To do so, they provide people with what they want and what is proven to grab attention. It isn't some plot to keep people ignorant. It just happens that are brains are wired to respond to sensational headlines and claims. It also just happens that the majority of people don't want to view or read content that challenges their perception of the world.

Basically, media caters to what people want, because that gets people to view ads. Educational content and content that makes you think doesn't bring in viewers or readers.

As for the main topic, are brains are unfortunately wired to view things that are different as dangerous. Our brains can only take in so many things, and grouping things and people together makes it easier for our brains to take in our surroundings and tell us what we need to pay extra attention too for us to be safe.

I live in area that has many different races, so seeing someone who is black, or Asian, or Middle Eastern, is normal and doesn't phase me. However, I grew up in an area that was predominantly white and it was easy to see someone who had a different color skin as being different. They were strange, exotic and different. It is hard not to be racist, and even scared of people from other races when you live in an area where everyone is the same.

I believe that racism, sexism, and judging someone by the sexual orientation are all wrong. However, I know that I some times have impulses to judge someone by how they look, and I need to work to step back from that impulse and judge them for who they are, not what they look like. It is easy to say you are not racist, but I expect a lot of people who say they aren't racist have the impulse to judge someone based on how they look as well.

Most people aren't racist, as in believe that one race is superior to another or has high inherent value.
However, everyone partly due to social conditioning and partly due to human nature is judgmental to some extent. If you doubt that statement then realize that for there to be ways of distinguishing correct social behavior from undesirable there must be ways of quantifying it, which means that people are evaluating each other and themselves on a daily basis; this act is the basis for being judgmental.

From being judgmental in general terms it's only a few steps away to being bigoted or cynical due to experience or certain stereotypes.

Here are a few points to think about.
You're walking late at night in a poorly lit and miserably maintained neighborhood and see someone dressed in a nice suit. After a few blocks you see someone dressed in shabby clothes that is walking erratically. Of the two which makes you feel less at ease when you pass by them (that is assuming you are one to be on edge and worrying about your safety)?

Now without mentioning the race, ethnicity or any other factors, I think most of us can agree that one way or another you will be judging the two individuals differently. I believe that actions often labeled as racist/sexist/etc. are simply logical conclusions people draw (maybe subconsciously) when confronted with social behaviors or stereotype enactments, and that these judgments stem primarily out of correlation rather than causation towards the ethnic/sex group in question.

(Someone please PM me if the discussion brings up any new and interesting developments, sorry I don't check crunchy forums a lot )

I'm a racist. Now please actually read this before posting about how horrible a human being I am.

My dislike is not done consciously. I don't look at an african american and think he's going to shoot me or rob me. I don't assume all hispanics exist solely to cut lawns and I don't believe every middle eastern person is a terrorist. I treat every person with the same respect I would expect to be shown to me. When I encounter someone from another race I feel a strong aversion. Subliminally there is something in the back of my head that is telling me to go away and have nothing to do with them. I am not a nitwit that is fueled by impulses though. My conscious mind steps in and I treat them normally. I am not some KKK extremist. Please don't compare me to those shitlords. I would never advocate violence or subservience onto other people for such a simple thing as skin color and physical differences.

I can't help the way that I feel but I'm also not going to lie about it to fit in with the crowd.

Interesting indeed. It's good to know that you are self-concious about it and know better.
Out of curiosity, do you have any idea of what the source of this aversion might be? I assume you've been pondering this a bit?

I have thought about it but haven't really come to any conclusion. I grew up in a upper middle class household in an area with no crime. If there was any 'triggering' event it happened far beyond my memory span.

I also do have subconscious aversions, I think it's just hardwired in our brains and human history has proved that if something's different, we must destroy it somehow. It's wrong yes, but it's going to take years to fully over come that in all humans. It's not something that's going to go away overnight and there will always be people who act on those feelings of aversion. What we can do is try not to act on it, and that can be very hard for some people and very easy for others.

The aversion becomes a problem when people give reason for hating a certain racial group. The city I live in has been receiving Somalis since I was little. Mom worked at JCPenneys for two years. During that time she became racist against Somalis because she had several bad experiences in trying to help them... And the one that was the worst was when Mom was carrying a stack of catalogs, you know the thick heavy things they used to have there, and suddenly a Somali woman slammed into her saying "get out of my way you white American bitch!" So in the end I don't blame mom for hating Somalis. I had to listen to her rant but she never actually did anything about it either. She's not of that opinion anymore though, she finally met some decent ones.

Then there's problems with trying to erase racism. Such as trying to make every workplace (and college) diverse with a certain percentages of each race. I remember Mom trying to get jobs in meteorology after she finally graduated from university. I was at least 11 at that time. I remember that she told me that the reason she was told that she wasn't given a job was because they needed to be diverse so they chose a black guy with lesser qualifications than her. Now I'm all for trying to make things equal, but trying to make things diverse doesn't make it equal. People should get the jobs they deserve regardless of race.
