What do you guys think about Nintendo's region locking?
The reason I bring this up is because i've recently seen some articles
On Crunchyroll about 3DS and Wii U games (Mostly Anime Based) soon to be released in Japan
I get excited when I hear the news, but then quickly come back to the realization
That Nintendo region locks games based on what country they're from.
Which brings up a couple other questions, like Why Nintendo region locks?
How do they benefit from region locking? and will they eventually drop region locking in a future update?
I'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions!

Region locking is an irksome thing, but the comic explains exactly why it exists. The primary reason for its existence is that game companies want to be able to dynamically set prices of their products based on region as the populations of different regions vary in their ability and willingness to pay for luxury products and services. Making games incompatible with systems from different regions allows for this.

A secondary reason that companies such as Nintendo like to region lock is due to cultural sensibilities. Japan, for example, is far more tolerant of sexual images and themes. If a publisher wants to have their game rated by the ESRB as T in the United States, they may have to censor some content. This happened with the soon to be released JRPG Bravely Default, and is fairly common. Without region locking, the theory is that foreign copies of games may find their way onto store shelves second hand, and that the content rating on the box of the localized copy of the same game may not apply to to contents of the foreign product. I don't find this to be a particularly compelling argument as region unlocked devices such as the original DS had very little issue in this regard, but it is an argument.

What it comes down to is that you must decide which region best suits your interests. I own both a Japanese and North American 3DS because I enjoy playing games from both regions. I'm fortunate to have the means to do so, and chose to buy both because I don't see Nintendo doing away with their region locking any time soon.

Shame they have followed that path. No region lock was what made Nintendo awesome to begin with. Still remember getting Pokemon games from USA, months ahead of the uk. Notably Nintendo now release same day, thus even if region locking was removed, I'd have got it from uk.

Now though many games me & bro would like to play are now unavalible to us. Nintendos region exclusives will now see a huge decline in import sales cos not many will get another console for a few games. It's no different then xb1, you start limiting the gaming experience, you'll see a drastic drop in sales & players.

Nintendo will only remove it if sales are really worse then they imagined.

The remember hearing the 3DS is the first handheld they have done this with, aside from the DSiWare games. It's inconvenient as hell but from a business and moral point of view I understand why Nintendo does it. I still think they should stop though. I have a Japanese game in my DS right now and I think that's the only thing holding me back from buying a 3DS right now.
