Toyota’s stunning FT-1 concept took center stage at The Detroit Auto Show

IMAGES

The Toyota Supra is one of those Japanese bubble-era cars that everyone says they loved—but nobody bought. And you could sense Toyota’s cautious enthusiasm for the FT-1 concept in how sparse it was in providing specs. Would it spawn a production car, and would that have a turbo inline-six, or a V-8? Undoubtedly, Toyota’s deciphering the buzz and whether people would fork over $40k+ for a RWD sports car. Nonetheless, the F1-inspired snout, Lexus LFA-esque tail and front air intakes straight out of an F-35 fighter sparked fantasies of a beefier, more powerful sibling to the Scion FR-S.

What do you guys thinks about it? being that Toyota is a japanese company I think Crunchyroll was the perfect place to have a discussion about it.

Looks good I have a 89' Toyota Corolla that stills runs fantastic. Haven't changed the oil in about 7 years also.

I have 4 toyota Cressida's, 1 of which has the 1JZ (thats 1jz-gte, twin turbo inline 6) from the JDM Supra (or chasser = cressida in japan) and I friggin love it. My wife has had 2 mkIII supra's, but each time the USDM 7M failed on us, I did eventually fix the dreaded BHG and sell them off, she now drives a UZZ30 (thats a Lexus SC 400 for you non JDM folk). We like the uber dependable 1uz better than the 7m's. Been a long time coming for a MK5 supra!

Well, It appears as though it would share some underpinnings with the fantastic FR-S. In terms of the body styling, Those fin points would be wrecked with chips after one drive down the highway..... Put in one of the fantastic Lexus V8s, and people would fork over that much. Better than the 80/90k from their original concept proposal.

Engine at the front, drive at the rear, that's the way a car should be. The car is available as a download for Gran Turismo 6 currently too, guys at Top Gear seem to like it so you never know, it may end up on the next series. I do recall the Nissan GT-R giving Clarkson a bad neck mind you. Series 11, Episode 4 is one to watch, but why no links to the best motor mag on the planet, Top Gear? (dya know, over 750m people watch Top Gear? That's more than watch the World Cup Final!)

Depending on the specs and price it could be an amazing shift from the boring last decade for Toyota, My personal opinion is that is will be overpriced at around 50-55k and many may want it, but few people will have the money to afford it, (kinda like the LFA) so while being a great car it will still end up being a flop.

The LFA flopped because it cost way too much for what you got. There were cheaper cars that performed just as well. Plus they forgot the cup holder in the LFA....

id still have to wait to hear the power specs. but for how sporty it looks id say its priced to sell.

i also hope the production model is toned down a little cause how embarrassing would it be to have a car that looks like THAT and it be only kinda fast

Of course it depends on the specs, it will possibly try to compete with say the M3, and the C63 AMG , but those cars have 420+ hp and cost around $60k-ish so IMO to compete it either has to be more powerful or much less expensive. If I were to choose either a $55k Toyota or a $60k BMW with relatively the same performance, I'd probably go with the tried and true method of the M3, since I would get the luxury benefits as well.
