100th Anniversary of WW1
Posted 1/16/14
This year, 2014 marks the 100th Anniversary of WW1; 28 July 1914 - 11 November 1918. It has (will have been) 100 years since the First World War.

It was one of the world's deadliest conflicts, and took the lives of millions globally. Numbers vary from between 15 - 20 million, to 37 million. Following WW1, the world again was hit with problems such as the Spanish Flu Influenza and the Russian Revolution which killed millions again. Later on, unresolved conflicts from this war turned into WW2.

This thread is for anything involving WW1. The war, countries involved, opposing sides, warfare, weaponry, people, stories, books, movies...etc. etc.

From past forum threads, I have noticed there are quite a number of people on here interested in history. This is a good way to share information, and to make people more aware.

Please, no arguments. This might be a thread about war, but it doesn't have to evolve into one.

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. - George Santayana

If you pay attention, you will discover that history is nothing more than a repetition of patterns. The human race has learned nothing from its mistakes.

Just one to say one thing; trenches saves lives. Uncomfortable, Yes. Annoying as hell, Yes. Usually save your life because you are in a hole in the ground, yes. So those who will bash trench warfare, trenches saves lives.

While you are not wrong, calling trench warfare "annoying and uncomfortable" is like calling a trip in a slave ship in the colonial times (while being an African American) "annoying and uncomfortable".

Where I live first word war isn't viewed as bad as it is in the rest of the word. After all thanks to it Poland regained independence lost almost 130 years before. And 11 November is our independence day. To be honest for us war began when it has ended since right after regain independence we had to fought on the east against communists from Russia.

What I hate about discussing the first world war is that when people say its futile and that it was pointless. When people arrogantly say that all of the first world war was pointless trench slaughter when trenches were there to protect lives. Trenches were terrible with the lice and the new diseases and without crunchyroll so the soldiers can't watch their newest anime but it saved so many lives that it proved it usefulness.

What I also hate is that when people heavily criticize the military leaders for being stupid. One of my favorite things my classmates will say is "why can't they go around?" Because there are trenches from the Swiss alps to the English channel. Or "don't they know how destructive their weapons are? Why can't they do a blitzkrieg like in World War 2?" Europe never had wars between the five major powers, (Russia, France, Prussia/Germany, Austria-Hungary, UK) on the scale on Napoleon for 99 years from waterloo. Even if you count the franco-prussian war 40 years prior (1870-1871) as a war between two major powers, it was short and contained with no machine guns. One can't simply blame the military administration for not knowing how to use their new weapons if they never really had to use it on the battlefield. It is like switching from a PC to a Mac. It takes time and testing in the Mac to fully get used to the new mac. Moreover the military did learn and tried to evolve. The German army led the way with Infantry tactics when in 1914, they used massive line charges to more highly mobile squads called stormtroopers. The English pioneered the modern amphibious assault as they try to assault Gallipoli. (Which ended in failure and an embarrassment to Winston Churchill). The French made the light tanks which are fast and maneuverable at the expense of Armour,

More things I hate about WW1 is the emphasis of the Western Front. No one really talk about the Eastern Front, the ottomans empire, Africa, Asia, the various German Cruisers, and even the Balkans where it all began. Heck I really hate when people think the only thing it led to World war 2. No!! It led to the instabilities in Palestine and the Arab world when the British made the Balfour Declaration in 1917 securing a Jewish Homeland while at the same time promising Palestine to the Arabs if they revolt against the Ottoman Turks even through in the end the British and French divided Palestine. It also led to how nations can deal with terrorism because assassinating the heir to the throne or a political leader is usually an act of terror. Heck the Assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand had a bomb involve! See terrorism! Also the terrorist group that was behind it was actually linked to the Serbian Government and the Austrians had every right to be pissed at Serbia. It led to the first communist state in Russia where people try to create a perfect world. (emphasis on the word tried!) The scariest thing is that War can work. Japan got tsingtao in China even through Japan and China were on the Entente. ( Or allies) Serbia the terrorist became a super Slav state Yugoslavia which is exactly why they started the war. Romania expands, Poland and Czechsolvakia was formed, German colonies were siezed. Italy got some but not all the territory it wanted from the secret treaty of London.

What we need to learn about the first world war is that it marked the end of one era and the beginning of another. It was the end or the beginning of the end of European Empires and the rise of nation-states. This post is way to brief to cover everything in World war 1. All I can say is that we need to learn more about the first world war because I have a feeling is that it is often glanced and often protrayed as simply a preview of what's next.

I am sorry to the moderator for ranting on the forum.
I am also sorry to soullesswatcher for being the start of my attack.
I just hope that we can learn something from the war to end all wars.

Sad part is, even in WW2 no one really remembers the Soviets and how much they did.

Read the book "all quiet on the western front" it will make you realize that even back in the primitive days war was horrible and even though people didn't have the technology to kill you by looking at you (a.k.a. apache gunships and other advanced vehicle tech) it was still awful because of the advent of high explosives, HMG's and artillery. But... at least these days there's no need to get innocent horses involved.

All quiet on the western front is a really short book so there's really no excuse for not reading it, it's great.

Wow.. Are you kidding? I'm not a history freak, but seriously only celebrate of WW1 and others war history is irrelevant.

Why not celebrate every single war in the human history since the birth of the human. I feel like people only care about WW1 only and not even bother looking at their civil war and many other wars that happen before WW1.

We can celebrate all the war in the human history, but we have no sympathy for that. Mostly, we don't give a shit about others war.
