Zeta Gundam – Episode 49.

It is the single most intense episode of anything that I have seen, bar none.

Sounds like someone forgot about Zeta Gundam - Episode 19 Cinderella Four

While Episode 49 is great and intense, it didn't capture my attention like episode 19 did. That episode turned my impression of Kamille Bidan from "the original Shinji" to "newtype romeo" in a single romance. That's the episode that turned Zeta Gundam into my favorite Gundam.

I believe it's either Episode 16 or 17 but spoiler alert.
Toji's episode from Neon Genesis Evangelion is easily my favorite episode in Anime. The entire chain of events that Toji goes through was so amazing, they decided to give it all to Asuka during the Rebuild movies because they didn't have time to re-develop her character. Ergo all the development and character she had in the original could be ignored, THEY JUST HAD TO TAKE ALL OF SOMEONE ELSES CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.

Seriously. The episode was spent hopping between the points of view of our various cast members. It would show you Asuka/Misato/Someonelse the moment they learned who the 4th Child was, and then it would show you Shinji noticing something off about his friend, but not connecting the dots.

The episode never goes out and tells you who exactly the 4th child is, they simply skirt around the subject. Providing the audience all the clues without telling us. So when the time came, we see/emphathize not only with Asuka but with Shinji as well. We know who's in the cockpit, but we're not sure. So the startling reveal at the end is shared with Shinji. He's horrified and we're like "Oh god we were right! IT IS HIM! WHY WAS I RIGHT!?"

It's an odd feeling, and that was the episode that drove me to actually owning the DVD's to Evangelion.

I feel like there are a lot I want to mention, but i'm having trouble pulling them out of thin air. Even while looking at my list. Two that do come to mind are

Sengoku Collection episode 18
For the most part, each episode in this show is its own story (baring a few exceptions). The story in this episode was amazing. Its sort of different from the other episodes, but that's a little unfair because each episode is so different. Nevertheless, this episode seemed like a masterpiece to me when I first watched it.

Lucky Star episode 22
The first half was what you'd expect from the series at this point. The latter half is still pretty normal, but they do something quite interesting and touching. Ugh, trying to talk about it without spoiling or giving hyped up expectations, but its definitely a 10/10 episode in my book.

I would've said episode 27 of Gurren Lagann, if I didn't despise the second half of it so damn much.

Baccano! Episode 1 (specifically the first 6-7minutes)

In my opinion, this is the perfect way to open an anime. The dialogue between Gustav St. Germain and Carol sets up the tone of the entire show, throws in tons of "spoilers" (even something that happens long after the anime ends) and pretty much blatantly explains to the viewers how this story would be told.
