I don't mind the school setting. I think it fits in with the storyline, but I wouldn't mind seeing more based in college/general life outside of school. So what do you think? Will Japanese people ever get bored of the school setting in anime/manga?

I think that they probably won't. They love it too much and are super used to it. Also they love how cute the uniforms are and the general environment it brings. Nothing wrong with that. It is in the culture.

It's cause their target audience is in that age range. It's something that won't ever change. There are plenty of anime/manga that aren't in a school setting but then again most of those are aimed at a older target audience.

The high school setting / teenage protagonist(s) trope is used a lot because high schoolers / teenagers are more interesting to write for. They have a lot of things to juggle: friendships, romance, school, and deciding on a future (and often some supernatural / superheroic fight to win). People much older already have some of that worked out, so it makes the story less dynamic.

It happens on both sides of the pond. Harry Potter? Twilight? Yeah, it's not going away any time soon.

As long as there are fresh batches of kids discovering anime, then no, it will always be there.

those animes don't last very long or remain that popular for long. It really takes a good story to keep those type going so I think they will always be the extras they throw in a season. It usuallly is the unique and well written ones that get the most attention. Everyone has their favorites and honestly while the school anime is not as new anymore it works. I don't see them stopping no but I certainly would welcome so new original content.

The Japanese way is to never change anything because it already works.

Do I believe the Japanese will ever get bored of it? No.

Would I like to see a larger variety of settings? Sure!

If the creator of a story insists on a school setting perhaps they could work with slightly older university aged characters. That setting has all the tensions of high school kicked up a notch.

probably not... for reasons already stated in this thread. But for those tired of it, there's a TON of manga out there geared toward an older audience. (: I use mangaupdates/bakaupdates a lot as a resource to find manga; it doesn't host manga, just posts summaries and reviews, and has a forum for suggestions. ^^

Anime are harder to find though... since the most popular stories made into anime are shounen and shoujo type.

ummm, maybe but that will be a long time from now, anime and manga lately is focused more on teenagers, so a familiar environment suits the audience. that could all change soon though.....
