Anti-heroes are great. They combine the appeal of villains with the likability of heroes.

...

Hopefully nobody is reading this who hasn't seen the final episode of Monogatari 2nd Season.

If you are, then find a cat, and a bag, and hit your head until one is back inside the other.

I really wouldn't mind at all if they pulled a Yukimura with Saika lol. Although I am sure it would piss others off hahaha.

As far as those two characters go. I don't know much about Kaiki, haven't watched too much Monogatari.

Hachiman is cool, I like his personality. I often feel the same way about a lot of people, just I do it with a smile. You can say I am a happy cynic, I have accepted that people will suck and moved on with it. Hachiman is a sad cynic, he has accepted that people suck, but hasn't learned to move on yet. The one thing that really hits close to home is Hachiman's criticism. Like I said I am a happy cynic, my best friend is an angry cynic. We always criticize each other so we have sort of built up an emotional resistance or acceptance to criticism. However, just like Hachiman, we find that when we criticize other people, no matter how totally small it is, they totally hate us for it. I suppose that is why I like Hachiman so much, because I can relate to him. He dares tell people what their problem is, and people hate him for it. I often do the same thing, and people hate me for it. More recently though I have just shut my mouth and let people continue making mistakes, I only let myself know when I am wrong. My friend on the other hand still criticizes people, and often complains to me that everyone calls him an asshole.

i'd say they have different personalities.. Hachiman is a bit more self aware of his character flaws and philosophy and readily accepts punishment in the way he solves problems.
Kaiki on the other hand seems like avoiding unnecessary risks that could cause problems for him. Though seems to change his tone when it comes to Kanbaru and her mom, thus why he decided to help Hitagi in the last arc of Monogatari Second Season.

Cool topic. I absolutely love these characters.

Four similarities:
1. Seem to be okay with being hated as long as they get the job done (Kaiki more so).
2. Very certain about their beliefs
3. Tackle things alone (Again, Kaiki more so)
4. Care about some people/person without showing it.

While I love both, Kaiki is my #1.
Why:
1. He's more mature/intelligent (partly because of age).
2. Has struggled far more and doesn't complain at all.
3. Hachiman's self-proclaimed "loneliness" pales in comparison to Kaiki's ( No family or friends. Only enemies and acquaintances).
4. Kaiki's solutions are more logical.
5. His way of thinking is more relate-able (For me, at least).
6. He's not a paragon of good will. He's a good guy deep down, but he's still a backstabbing con artist.

Thanks guys, I think I got a pretty good idea now. You guys are right, they're cynical heroes who kind of look down on humanity. I guess its just refreshing to see guys who aren't' always so.... upbeat and annoying. They're both so relatable. I'm gonna make another guess here and say people love these guys because even though they're cynics, deep down they're really goody guys. Hachiman for sure, Kaiki...... well I do want to believe that he really is a good guy. I feel like by the end of the arc, he really wanted to help Hitagi(I mean he was trying to find reasons in his head to help her), Hanekawa, and even Nadeko.

As for the Totsuka stuff, you know I think SNAFU is the one of the only anime I have watched where I liked everyone in his harem(if you want to call it that lol) and I mean everyone. I even like the obscure members like Saki and the class president(yes I do think she kinda likes him).

Is there any Tragic Anti-Heroes MC who died in the end?

On-topic about monogatari but spoiler.

I've only seen Hachiman's show.

But I suspect he is popular because he basically speaks out for the loner crowd, plus he's incredibly perceptive. Even an optimist like me can feel a bit cynical about the state of the world at times, and having someone else speak out (or monologue) those thoughts is very fulfilling, in a way.

Monogatari novel spoilers regarding Kaiki after Koimonogatari:

Both Kaiki and Hachiman are anti-heroes and cynics. Their writers are the real reason why they are great I think, Nisioisin and Wataru Watari are masters both of storytelling and light novel prose.
