They've also copyrighted the word SAGA.

What they should've done is to copyright the whole game name instead, "Candy crush saga".
Bioware and EA has done that with Mass Effect.

The reason they copyrighted it was because another company copied their game, so they say.
Funny thing about that is that their game rips off Bejewled. Which again copies Collums by Sony.

Minecraft copies other older games too, but you don't see any of the creators behind the old games copyright single words :P

It's only in the EU. Not sure if it's the whole of Europe or just the contries that is part of the Europe Union.
But Apple has started to send out notices to anyone who has made an app with Candy in the name.

And this guy tried to upload the video to Vine but was rejected because the title had Candy in it.

Some copyright holders are so damn retarded.
I seriously hope they go bakrupt. Anyone who is shitty enough to copyright single words deserves that.
The only people who should be able to copyright single words is the family of the person who invented the word :P

What'll happen is that it probably backlashes at King (creators of Candy sh*t) and people will buy The Banner Saga instead XD

"The trademark application was spotted by Gamasutra, and reveals that the company first decided to trademark "Candy" last February, though it was approved for publication on January 15. This now means there's a 30-day window for other companies to oppose the trademark."

Hope other companies will oppose it.
I'd be surprised if no one does, it's just to damn stupid.

I seriously think that they shouldn't have done that. I think it's going a little overboard to trademark something that can and already be used. I hope they think about what they're doing

How do you trademark a common word like Candy that's been around for ages?

You have a lot of money, and go to a patent office

I thought there were limitations on what you could patent. I've never researched the process, but I thought they had those limitations so people couldn't patent something like Foot (or Candy), and then go after any shoe company that put Foot in the name to help marketing.

I could see "Candy Crush Saga" given the uniqueness of the phrase, but trademarking Candy and Saga separately sounds far too ambiguous to actually work.

They trade marked those two words with respect to games and clothing only. This does not affect food or other non game non clothing industires.

with that being said I really do hope that someone else challenges this as it sets a very bad example for others to follow.

Wow I hate these games. Candy Crush needs to go die in a fire. That company is just trash.
Mobile games are slowly ruining gaming by adding f2p options and other things.

Almost like when Marvel tried to Copy Right the word 'zombie'.... (Marvel Zombies wasn't even a good arch. It was actually dumb)

Same with this. These [email protected] think you can buy words, just because your piece'a'crap game did well for niche audiences? That's a pretty big statement their trying to make. Is the game really that good, that everything attributed to it, must also be packaged and sold? I played it once, I thought it was f**kin' stupid....

You can't own the word 'candy'. Is Willy Wonka gonna have to fork over residuals, every time some one buys a pack of Nerds? I hope they get laughed out of court.

Makes me think of Donald Trump on trademarking "You're Fired."

It made sense to do what you stated, which was to copyright their game to prevent someone else taking the game title, but I guess that it too much logic their fragile minds can not handle. Hopefully a protest is in the process to stop the abuse of patenting and trademarking slogans or simple words, because this is ridiculous.

They might as well trademark the word "idiocy" while they're at it.
