I usually wait for around four or three episodes into the new season to start watching anime, but that's because reasons.

That is a really solid list of anime to watch, Insomnist; I own quite a few on DVD/BD as well. I'd add:

Accel World
Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad
Black Lagoon
Chihayafuru
Dusk Maiden of Amnesia
Eden of the East
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet
Genshiken
Ghost in the Shell
Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl
Gurren Lagann
Haganai
Kids on the Slope
Kimi Ni Todoke
Kokoro Connect
Mysterious Girlfriend X
Samurai Champloo
Spice and Wolf
Summer Wars
The Pet Girl of Sakurasou
Toradora!
Wolf Children
Working!!

I enjoyed these all greatly and would recommend them to anyone who's put them off. My list is by no means exhaustive either, so there's more I'd recommend that I'm not thinking of at the moment. I put of SAO, PMMM, AoT, and other popular titles before but ended up watching them all in marathon runs. I'm just getting to Psycho-Pass, and plan to watch Penguindrum, Bodacious Space Pirates, Nichijou, all the Monogatari incarnations, C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control, Doujin Work, El Cazador de la Bruja, Kaichou wa Maid-sama!, and more when I have the time.

For me, Haruhi was a lot (both seasons, movie, and those shorts) and so was Madoka Magica, but you can blame Aniplex's pricing for the latter. Most of the others I found for cheap (by anime standards).

I lucked out with Haruhi. I got the limited edition set of the first season around the time when Bandai just finished releasing volumes 2-4 (didn't need volume one of the limited edition since 2-4 had the entirety of the first season in the weird broadcast order.)

All three were available from amazon's warehouse deals (where they sell items that got damaged, packaging ripped etc.) The damage amounted to dents on the cardboard boxes & outer plastic removed, but each volume came out to 10-$15 and worked fine.

I didn't touch the second season though. A friend of mine got the full season 1-2 set, but The Endless 8 and the lackluster additional episodes convinced me to keep my money

If only Crunchyroll & FUNimation would start streaming anime movies regularly..
The cost per movie is usually unreal compared to a full season of an anime (which is also unreal when you compare it to a full season of a British or American drama series.)

My Ghibli set quickly massacred my bank account

Funimation actually does rather well on the movie front, although there are some glaring exceptions (i.e., the Evangelion movies) in their streaming catalog.
