In the beginning I said Log Horizon because Sword Art Online started really strong with Aincrad and then finished a bit weakly with Fairy Dance. But...

Log Horizon seems to be suffering a bit of a similar fate lately. Strong beginning, weak middle which I dearly hope will be fixed by an "all's well that end's well" awesome ending but the last few episodes have been a bit lackluster to me.

Why not both?

But, if I had to choose it would be SAO. Sometime I would forget that the people are trap in a MMO. Slowly their moving away from that idea. When they do get to fight they go over the trivial MMO information that everyone knows.

SAO is more Action and fast paced.

Log Horizon is more thought out and slow paced.

It comes down to personal preference, and how much Fan Service you want

What I like the most is what the two focused on. SAO's biggest thing was surviving the game because death still had its hold over everyone. It was literally a life or death game. Log Horizon, on the other hand, seems to focus more on the psychological and emotional aspects of this kind of situation. How each person would react being stuck in a world with no known way of going back to your friends and family. Some people would probably love it, but others wouldn't.

Btooom!
The game went into real world instead of main character into the game.

Sigh, both series have their merits. I don't understand the desire to rank these two series, especially since Log Horizon is not done airing nor is it following a similar path as SAO. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, and neither is flawlessly executed in my view.

So I vote for Monster Rancher because monsters rule!

I like both anime and each of them have there own unique story(even though both of them are similar), but I would chose SAO

I find it funny how these two series are being compared despite being almost nothing alike besides their setting. That's where pretty much the similarity ends. As what I prefer so far, Log Horizon of course.

Log Horizon, easy.

At first, I didn't want to give it a chance, because it seemed like a SAO rip off, and I don't particularly care for SAO to begin with. I feel SAO was ruined by breakneck plot speed in the first half, that took the impact out of events, supporting characters and deaths. Then, it severely misstepped at the halfway point. (If you've seen it, you know what I mean.) It's like the ending came 12 episodes too early and then it was followed by a stupid engagement angle.

My dislike for SAO (Which I am giving the second half a second chance, now.) is what made me shy away from Log Horizon after the first episode. But, giving it a second shot as well, I find that it's much better. The Story pace is solid, I like the characters much more and most of all, it plays like an actual MMORPG experience, something SAO doesn't really do.

Log Horizon is superior in almost every aspect with the exception of the animation style. SAO wins that sole category.

That being said, I'm not that deep into Log Horizon, yet. I'm at episode 4. So, there could be missteps to come, but for now, Log Horizon.

Log Horizon. Personally think it has a much better storyline and more interesting characters. It also feels like an anime made for MMORPG fans with several nods to gaming and types of people in these games. I also like the focus on telling the story and the politics of the game world over just constant hitting things and the hero being impossibly strong. It's nice too while romance and fan service exists they didn't go overboard with it and kept the focus on the main storyline over having a long drawn out romance that then becomes the story.

Another way to put it is this:

You want a standard action show with really good fight sequences? Go SAO

You want a slower 'cultural' show with a very nonstandard hero/plot/flow? Go LH

It's totally possible to love both styles, but that's the kind of difference we're really looking at.
