SAO, log horizon seems to drag on a lot of the times, but at least when SAO dragged on they at least made it fun.

I enjoyed both. They approached the same scenario from completely different angles.

If I had to choose one over the other, I would have to side with Log Horizon. There is still plenty of story to be told.

Sword Art Online due to romance realized, Log Horizon very good but romance perpetually stalled

I feel that SAO could've been better, but was held back by so many problems in the series.Log Horizon on the other hand was well thought out and actually had some decent characters, with an interesting plot and end. In my mind both of them were entertaining to watch, it's just that the quality of Log Horizon was so much better than SAO's.
(If you actually want to see my reasons on why SAO was lacking and why Log Horizon is so much better, go to my page and read my reviews on both series.)

Is anyone else excited for when Log Horizon season 2 airs halfway through SAO GGO, just to see how things work out?

Third Necro of the thread?

Still LH though. SAO is great until you start actually thinking about it.

Background on me: I've watched all that CR has to offer for both Log Horizon and Sword Art Online. Log Horizon was about a third to half done when I started it, so I had to wait for the rest of the episodes to go up week by week. During that time I re-watched most episodes 2-3 times, usually going back to the beginning and running through as much as was available. The last few episodes that didn't happen, not because I didn't enjoy them but because I just never finished my final run through to know I had watched them all at least twice, and I keep having other things to watch or totally am not in the "mood" (usually for animé in general).

Before watching LH, I watched SAO. I almost skipped LH because I feared it was little more than a (popular) cash in attempt on SAO. SAO had finished on CR so I was able to watch it all in probably three to five sittings as time permitted (I think it was no more than two weeks, might have been one long weekend; don't remember). I seem to recall getting to some parts where I had to take a break not because of time constraints, but because I just didn't "feel" like watching more... but like I said I don't remember; for all I know I am remembering my reaction to other series seen shortly before or after; this isn't an uncommon occurrence for me.

As has been pointed out, while they have elements in common, the are compared because of the one more unique element they share (MMORPGs, getting stuck in "another world", being animé, similar target demographics) which sounds like a lot to have in common... but nearly every superhero comic book, no matter if its satire, spoof, serious, targeting kids, meant only for adults, etc. into the same "genre". If I had to choose, though, I've enjoyed Log Horizon more. SAO is good, and I was able to enjoy most of it... but so far I've never felt like re-watching it. Its a very "manipulative" story that knows exactly what buttons to push to elicit a response from the reader. Even assuming this is a legit approach (I am divided on that), I find it draining.

I don't want to risk "bashing" elements of the shows I really struggled with, so I'll just defend two things about Log Horizon that I didn't notice being covered when I read through this entire thread tonight before posting.

1) Yes the adventurers in Log Horizon are adjusting and not dwelling too much on escape... look at the premise. Yes you probably miss your friends and family, and may be a bit scared of this world... but even if you're low level, you're a superhuman now. It is pointed out that it isn't just "I can cast spells" either, but even things like walking, lifting, etc. are easier/less tiring the higher level you become. Now add on the Skills, the user interface (free friend-to-friend two-way telepathic conversation!), and the who not dying thing (they didn't learn about the memory loss until later) and you can see why getting home isn't a huge deal. Frankly if the "game world" of Log Horizon could sustain it and there weren't any potential unknown risks, the goal would probably be to take anyone not enamored with "the real world" and planar summon them to the world of Log Horizon.

2) The "harem" aspect shows up towards the end of Log Horizon, and it is hard to tell how it will be treated e.g. it might be quite relevant to the story and won't just be "lol trope". Fan service seems to be less frequent and more tame, though that might be a matter of perspective.

And now...

SAO. I've never even watched Log Horizon. Should I?

Absolutely.

The short version is that in terms of risk versus reward, its low risk (won't like it) with a potentially amazing reward (will love it). Compare and contrast that to series that either risk to offending or traumatizing viewers. I am not saying such shows as the latter can't be great, just that if you end up hating such a show, you've exposed yourself to offensive or traumatizing elements for no reward.

So speaking of me trying SAO - I guess I should try Log Horizon? I haven't heard much about it really.

Did you try them? If so, how did it go?

This was actually more difficult for me than i originally thought it was going to be. I loved SAO's first arc and didn't hate the second one. I loved how Log Horizon started, but it did start to drag on in the middle but ended wonderfully IMO.. I am really looking forward to both upcoming seasons, but i honestly might have to go with Log Horizon.

Aside from Kirito, Asuna, and Klein there were not many other characters i liked in SAO.

But i have a massive list of characters that i liked in LH.

Log Horizon has my vote

I read your LH review. Funny because you have a pretty formal approach to reviews, doing it category by category. Thing is, I think this works least for shows like LH and SAO, because like I said in the title of my own, I think that the some of their technical parts isn't really anything worth writing home about. I think you were a bit generous towards the action, pacing and characters to be honest. My rating of those would have hovered around 2, and so dragged down the overall score lower than the 8/10 I ended up giving it. I don't really do that type of review any more because I don't think that you can reduce any show to the sum of a bunch of arbitrary categories and make a score tallying them, you have to keep the big picture in mind. Just my two cents.

I agree, though Shiroe was definitely sufficient as an MC (who are almost always boring), with plenty of solid side characters (whom you can't really expect to have much depth in a somewhat light anime like this). What I don't get about people loving the side-characters in SAO, is that they surface so darn rarely. I mean, they each get appearances in what, 1-3 episodes? Hardly enough time for any of the blokes to become more than flat good guy gregs or the chicks to become more than derpy moe drooling over Kirito's sword...

They work to add a few colourful faces to the scene, to produce a general fun atmosphere and support the main characters, but don't really exist and act independently beyond that.

Renegatz Thanks for some of the tips. I do realize that some anime really aren't suited to be reviewed in categories like LH and SAO, but I find it's really hard to review things in general because there are so many details you have to go through before you're done and sometimes ideas get skewed along the way. But I will take your advice and try to focus more on the big picture in my future reviews, thanks for the suggestion.
