I kind of wish people would stop pitting these series against each other so much when they're so different.

I mean don't get me wrong, I'm not pulling the "THEY'RE BOTH GOOD" card or anything. Log Horizon is a MUCH more well-written story than SAO. It knows how to handle a large cast of characters without just regularly forgetting most of them exist, doesn't constantly reduce its female characters to haremettes and/or sources of fanservice, and is a lot more concerned with logic and consistency both in how the world works and the characters act. But it still very clearly doesn't appeal to the same people as SAO for the same reasons.

I'm watching Log Horizon right now (almost done with it), and like, it's a GOOD STORY, but it still just feels a little underwhelming and not all that fun. In terms of visual presentation it's far weaker than SAO, although I suppose that has more to do with the anime adaptations and the budgets they got than the stories themselves. But even with that considered, it's not really as much my kind of story. I can appreciate it for what it is, but I want action, and interesting environments, and a more large-scale, fast-paced plot rather than one that gradually chugs along through political negotiations and the planning and execution of complicated schemes. And SAO delivers on that front - just, unfortunately, not very well.

Basically, Log Horizon is an example of the trapped-in-an-MMO genre done right, but it's decidedly not "SAO done right". The fact that Log Horizon exists and is actually good does not keep me from desperately wishing that SAO didn't suck so much.

Well then, now that I've completely watched both of their s1's, I can accurately and safely talk about it!

Really the two protagonists from both shows encompass the show they come from perfectly: Kirito is brash, impulsive, and who's solution to most problems is to jump in headfirst swords swinging. Shiroe is calm, patient, methodical, and tries to think ahead and come up with a plan before drawing swords....nevermind his skills are more useful in the back, not at the front.

SAO I felt never really used the video game elements of it's setting to its fullest. It was just a background. There were times when sometimes I forgot it was supposed to be in a game and that it was just another generic fantasy adventure show. And in s1, it was never about the games part in terms of its story in the first place. LH on the othe hand, was all about exploring "What if video games and real life clashed in this way?" And it's all about the characters trying to figure out how and why everything worked as it did.

Or, to think of it this way: SAO is Call of Duty, while LH is Battlefield 3.

Personally, I'm of mind that all of the Aincrad arc wasn't very good either.

I'm glad I read nothing about either of these animes before I watched them so it didn't give me any preconception of the characters... I loved SAO's first season but not a big fan of season two so far, only on episode 4... and I loved Log horizon too but have yet to watch any of season two... so the first seasons in comparison... SAO would win, has more of a tangible love story than LH and it bothers me when people hate the hero because they're misunderstood.

Uh...does it really matter that much if there is a love story? Because for all intents and proses, LH isn't interested in telling that kind of story.
