No I'm what most people would consider older but I don't necessarily feel that way, they say 50 is the new 40 so does that then mean 20 is the new 10, I don't think so. I've watched anime for years now and haven't grown out of it and I don't think I ever will, as long as the diversity continues. As for identifying with characters I personally don't, I don't watch films, TV, or read books and identify with any characters in fact books I read as a teenager and have read over again as an adult I can get a different meaning from them or realise how much of it went over my younger head.
There are lots of anime out there that are not teen based for example Baccano, GITS both films and series, Black Jack, Samurai 7, Samurai Deeper( manga is better tho), Cowboy Bebop I could go on but as long anime continues to produce new conceptions whatever the genre I will still choose to be a proud member of the anime watching community even if I hit 90 which will of course be the new 80.

I'm pretty young so no, never really thought about it. I wonder if I'll even still be watching anime when I'm in my 20s or 30s. If I am, I'd probably feel a little creepy watching a series about high school kids...

does one really NEED to be the same age as someone else to be able to relate to them? no. also...

I've never been on any magical adventures, but I've certainly been to middle school. which one do you think would be easier to relate to?

You are only as old as you feel. The older I get, the more I appreciate feeling/acting young.

I barely relate to anime characters as it is. It is more about understanding the plights of said characters and whether I can feel empathetic enough about them that keeps me coming back. So, as long as the story is good, and the characters are well written, I don't think it will matter in the long run.

I just see the story how it unfolds, whats this imagine crap? I've even recently seen pokemon even and it still feels fun, and its not just nostalgia either, even the newer episodes seem fun. I remember pokemon coming out when I was in the 3rd grade, and it still keeps its charm all those years. I would say though around middle school times and early highschool I strayed away from "childish things" but I think straying away from "childish things" is a childish thing to do.

When I watch pokemon I don't image myself as ash that is really dumb imo, any anime I don't do that. Once your an adult for awhile adult things just aren't as fun anymore with a few exceptions. I could care less if something was made for my demographic or not I can enjoy anything that I want as long as I see something of value in the show.

Also keep in mind alot of the shows with middle schoolers in it are actually for older people, because thats how the anime culture in japan is... That show with the elementary basketball lolis isn't for it to relate to kids just trust me on that.

I'm not that old, but I already don't relate to the characters anymore.
*-* I've come to appreciate them in a new way though. I wouldn't have ever thought when I was 12 that I would ever come to refer to shonen manga protagonists as "precious little babies".

Interesting query, as something I've noticed is that anime itself seems to be trying to mature....the quality of modern anime, both of visuals and narrative, is quite staggering compared to even a decade ago. There are "smart" harem shows like the -monogatari series; fun surreal works like Kyousiga; even moe shows, which many find distasteful, can create evocative pieces like Non Non Biyori......none of these are works of art by any meaning of the word, however what they have in common is a measure of quality that, at the very least, doesn't insult the intelligence and the sensibilities of anyone over the age of twelve watching 'em, and seek to further define what anime *can* be.

No.

Simply what I relate to in anime is ageless.

Nope! I'm over 40! Bring on the lolis! :

But seriously. As you get older tatste change. I've not much of a of harem shows anymore and I'm getting tired of the Moe shows that seem to be all the rage. But I am enjoying Kill la Kill(great action over the top story) , Witch Craft (turning around common tropes and it so pretty) works, and Log Horizon (a good story and alot of likeable charaters)

I'm looking foward to the next season of Jojo's and Mushi-shi which has some over 20 protagonists in it. we will see what else catch my attention.

I don't watch as much as I used to but I still enjoy the genre.

Well, you might do like I did. I went away from anime for a decade and then came back. And, you will realize what was truly classics and what was garbage by trying to rewatch shows from when you were younger.

Things like good humor and a good plot transcend age.

This thread is just a lot like the satanic thread: Kind of silly. Just like Camelot.
