No anime has had good characterization in well over a decade, they're all just "moe" or "kawaii" fluffle.

That anime can be even more enjoyable when experienced for the first time with others in the same boat

Plus at least 5 series I would not have watched/heard of had it not been for these forums (and I haven't even been on here a year!)

I've also learned that no matter what genre, anime, character it is, it has a fanbase. Someone, somewhere is into it. That's what I like most about the CR community.

-Lack of recognition for some quality anime.
-Some posters watch certain anime to make sure it's exactly like it's original source, then complain when it's not a carbon copy of it.
-Everyone's tastes are...certainly different.
-Some posters negate all flaws in popular anime...just because it's popular (Nisekoi, Kill la Kill), then point out everything wrong with less popular shows (Recently, My Sister is Unusual).

That my taste differs a bit from some people.

Also, the forum sure got a lot more active the past few years. It wasn't like this around 2011-beginning of 2012 from what I could remember.

Well CR's simulcasts started expanding around that time from just a few series to a large chunk, if not the majority, of the shows airing each season. Not to mention that the streaming app started appearing on more platforms. Basically more people had access to CR and more reason to use CR. At least that's my theory.

Mainly I learned that I can interact with anime fandom without cringing ><

Also had a fun transformation. At first I thought I liked things totally different than the main thrust of the crowd, but I saw if I look deeper, there are plenty of folks that like the same kind of stuff.

Finally I learned that you can get a lot of value out of applying deconstruction and lit-crit methods to anime. Really fun and eye opening.

I think you're right on that part. Back from end of 2011 or from what I could remember, CR added more series than usual and started expanding its library more and more. There were some series that were delayed for days though while others stimulated 30 minutes-1 hour after Japan's premiere. The times nowadays have significantly improved and from last season, CR managed to acquire 40+ titles which is a huge change.

This.

I've also learned that, 70% of the time, people can have civil discussions when their tastes in anime differ.

But only 70% of the time.

Since finally daring to look into the forums around March of 2013 I have noticed the following:

- Tastes are extremely different.... which is a good thing. Every show has a good solid fan base for someone to get into.

- If its overhyped, people critique it WAY WAY more (x100000) than the average show (Sometimes to a point there has to be a meaning for every action the MC does even if it involves him having to go to the bathroom). This "over hype", I see affects their viewing experience and ultimately destroys the show they watch.

- Fan Service arguments make me lose IQ.

- For some reason, people like to go into discussions of a certain show. Then, on it's first episode they say "This show sucks. I'm not going into that mess, so I'm dropping." while people are discussing the anime. Thus, providing nothing to discuss except us knowing he isn't going to watch it.
