Alright, so almost every really fantastic main character has some sort of weakness, or flaw. I'd like to hear what are some common weaknesses, or flaws, you tend to give your protagonists, or other important characters you write about. This can be a personality flaw, a weakness they have against certain things, some sort of issue they have physically, or just about anything that makes this character less than perfect.

I tend to make my characters emotionally flawed instead of physically, giving them issues with interacting with people, as well as weaknesses that make it harder from them if this story involves fighting.

How about you?

Yeah personality flaws are good. Also deep psychological issues are fun to work with too.

Stuff I hate is wimps, or whiners, or wussies, or weaklings, or wretchedly annoying beyond all comparision to the point where I'm rooting for them to die somehow.

A fetish, which can cause behavior problems, and strange aversions or attractions, as well as causing the character to be secretive.

Oh baby, what kind of fetishes are you into?

JK, Also sexual harrasment ftw I guess.

And yes OP, you can see I too have obvious character flaws. Rest assured, underneath I'm a stone cold badass.

Personality flaws; as in, the inability to feel a certain emotion, probably, or the struggle of normality. I usually like my characters to be sneaky liars, because those are the ones that are the best. I like stubborn characters.

Pardon my rudeness, Fraulein. Please forgive me. I would never knowingly try to upstage such a wonderful woman. Rather, such a thing would not be possible for one as lowly as me.

I guess my most common weakness i use is that they are easily manipulated by what they want to hear. Sort of hero characters who live by some failed logic or not everything they do is exactly good it's just right in their own ideals. I hate characters who are too perfectly good so i sway more towards those who do bad things in the name of good.

Weaknesses are an interesting subject. As one of my writing teachers told me, if your protagonist doesn't have some sort of a weakness, then there is a good chance that the character will not be interesting. Your protagonist has to over come themselves as well as their antagonist to make a good story. Everyone knows what the story is, boy meets girl, epic quest, tragedy, there are only a few kinds of stories out there. What your reader wants to know is how they get there, how does the journey change them, do they over come their drug habit or die of over dose? What does the protagonist learn over the course of events? That is the story

By the way if it seems that I am ranting, your right. It's almost 3 am on a sleepless night.

There! The Character can't sleep, that is a great weakness

Your protagonist should have weaknesses that will allow him to overcome himself and become stronger. I saw a TED talk the other day of a guy talking about how limitations really make us a better person because it drives your creativity to places you thought only were full of walls and boxes. Maybe what he meant is that simplicity is the pillar of complexity. But anyhow, that's besides the point. I like to give my characters emotional flaws but the ones where you don't let go.

Example: The guy is fighting his best friend or lover and it is also his biggest weakness. It is up to you to build up the story on how he will overcome that obstacle of letting go of that person so he can achieve that bigger goal of saving the world or saving his new lover ........ or something along the line haha
