I'm sad that the harem end option is so uncommon

I'm of the opinion that a harem isn't a happy ending. The protag can dance and sing all he wants about how much he loves each of them but in reality all the harem proves is he doesn't love any of them individually enough to make a commitment to them. They are all just members of the harem; nothing individually special about any of their relationships. To me this is sad because I think they deserve better than that. They deserve a partner who can devote themself to them as much as they do which DOES NOT HAPPEN with a harem. Loving someone shouldn't need you to join a f**kin cue.

That being said a half assed love like that is better than no love at all so it certainly has its advantages over the "no one gets anyone" and non endings we see so much of in supposed romance shows these days (seriously what is the point of a romance with no resolution to the whole ROMANCE aspect of it!?). So while it isn't exactly my preferred way of ending a harem comedy I would tolerate it a lot more than it never going anywhere.

ALSO!!! If it does go to a harem ending it by zeus' mighty beard better be an open harem! By this I mean that if the protag is allowed to have 3+ girls as his lovers then each of those girls better damn well be allowed to be in a relationship with more than just him as well! If he isn't gonna commit then why should they? Fair is fair right?!

Ugh... This mentality...

YOU might not have love enough for more than one person, but I am entirely capable of loving everyone who is important to me, and I do so as evenly as possible. This social concept that one person should be EVERYTHING to someone is why relationships are so messed up most of the time, no one can handle that burden. No one should ever have to.

To suggest that a person must commit to a single other human being above all else, and that they must never seek positive feelings from other sources, is just selfish, plain and simple. That works two ways as well, a bunch of girls shouldn't just belong to the male lead (or vice versa for 'reverse harems), they should all get different forms of gratification from each other (emotional, mental, physical, and sexual).

Now, some people are legitimately monogamous. They're happier and healthier that way, and that's awesome. I'm talking about the social onus of forcing people to be monogamous and shaming and denying those who are not (as well as pushing the concept of jealousy as reasonable behavior to act upon).

In this case though, I think it's fair to say that harem leads don't seem to feel the same way about any of the girls as vice versa. The girls are the ones who have crushes, who can't control their desire and get all hot and sweaty fawning over their guy. The guy meanwhile, though he cares for everyone and may act like a pervert towards them, isn't possessively, obsessively drawn in to them the same way, and his feelings for the main girl are restrained and blandly chivalric most of the time. This is so that there's a gap that the audience can fill with their own desires for whatever shippings they have in their head, but basically it never really feels like the MC "loves" any of the girls, not least the ones that aren't the main girl.

I always found the ending of Love Hina

I think that the nature of the events in the story and the "feel" of the show play a huge role in whether or not a harem ending is believable. This is why supernatural or over-the-top scenarios give the harem ending more weight.

Sekirei was mentioned earlier. In that, on top of the normal emotions, it establishes that there's a much deeper bond that forms between the sekirei and the ashikabi, and is stronger if actually nurtured, as opposed to those who treat sekirei like tools/playthings. And since Minato is Mister Nice Guy, the bonds of the "harem" are pretty darn strong. In addition, even just winging some of his sekirei took life-or-death struggles, on top of everything else they've gone through. So between the shared conflict, enhanced sekirei-ashikabi bonds, and the obvious care that they all have for each other, I can see this being a good harem ending. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if:

Haiyore Nyarko-san, as a different example. It's clearly more whimsical. Toss in the supernatural elements. Though I expect it to end as a non-resolution open ending, really, I can see them going harem for the heck of it, if they wanted to. Mahiro doesn't seem to show that kind of interest in anyone. Seems more like a sense of loyalty and resignation to his situation, than anything else. But then, actually going through with a full unwanted harem would be fitting for the show...haha.

And for an older example, the early Tenchi Muyo shows. Supernatural conflicts enhancing personal and interpersonal growth, check. With his pedigree, position, and his family's history of polygamy and marriage with closer relatives than is now normal...it would have been a believable harem ending, if they had decided to go that way.

This all as opposed to harem shows based on realistic settings. Would a harem (of two) ending for Toradora have worked? No.

White Album 2? No.

So again, the more "unreal" elements there are, the more fitting the harem ending becomes. But the more real elements there are, the less fitting the harem ending becomes.

At this point I'd be happy with an actual ending.

I don't understand why they don't make multiple endings for said harem. You can have the main girl ending but why not release OVAs for the other girls? Most of the time, I don't even like the main girl for said harem. Kurumo, Sena, Tsugumi, Masamune, Bell-chan, Laura. The list goes on and on man.

A actual Harem Ending? No thanks. To me, that just makes the main character into someone skeezy. It then also makes the girls into prizes that obviously are okay with two-timing. I don't know about other people, but the thought of sleeping around with a bunch of people kinda doesn't sit well with me. Harem series are usually bad enough with their lazy writing and bland characters. No need to make it worse. <.<

EDIT: There are exceptions when it comes to certain series. Tenchi was mentioned above. While I am not a fan of the Harem thing, it does make sense in that universe. So, if it WORKS in universe, then whatever, have fun. Even if I don't like the idea even in those settings. XD

I think it would be interesting if more anime had the harem ending, just to see what it's like. I know that there are some out there, but what if it became popular.

Only 2 that I've seen that ended with the Harem option are Campione! and High School DxD.

Tenchi doesn't count because he's too much of an indecisive wuss. (#TEAM_RYOKO)

in shoujo, there's always a love triangle, and often the second male love interest is a fun and nice guy. but if the first guy isn't bad either, then it's hard to chose between the two. so yes, i don't understand why the girl can't have all the guys, it'd be pretty nice...

regular harems, eh.
