thats true: a good amount of the references are japanese culture, but the subtitles sometimes explains it and its still funny to me even after i get the explanation of the joke..but i can see how ppl might not like it...it's their culture they do what they want! huge mountain! (otsu suffix)
theres also american ref. too: ben johnson....ILL smith (hehaha)... patriot

OH GOD DON'T say anymore abt the second movie!...haven't seen it yet...considering waiting for blu ray because thats what i did with the first movie..no regrets cause i got to see odd jobs in that beautiful blu ray picture and i recommend it to fans w/extra cash to blow who haven't seen it in blu ray... "please get it. otherwise, i'll rip your mole off! =)"

that emoticon is tearing at my heart... tell me that those tears are because it was such a heart touching movie, right?

It's best not to think of anime as a genre, and instead as animation with multiple genres like TV or film. So, what would you like to watch right now?

Welcome, Come with us and we shall not disappoint you!
As for anime you should watch.... guess it really depends on the type you wanna see. what you should do is go to the top of the page and click the shows tab by the crunchyroll sign. there is a list of anime that is sorted by popularity. click on one that looks interesting and read up on it and desicde if its for you. (everyone has different tastes) you can start watching a couple and see which ones catch your eye. you can also to to the shows tab and scroll down to search by genres (which is pretty close to the top on the side) and get started from there! Good Luck!

Here's some suggestions, although you won't find them all here on CR.....

1. Cowboy Bebop (My Fav)
2. Durarara
3. Gurren Lagann (WILD!)
4. Akagi
5. Fooly Cooly (Total Classic)
6. Welcome To The NHK (Heartfelt drama. I don't normally like this sub-genre, but this one is special)
7. Melody of Oblivion
8. Gantz
9. Flowers of Evil (Interesting and twisted psychological drama)
10. Monster

Happy hunting!

After a lot of persuasion by my friend about watching Sword Art Online, I signed up for the crunchyroll 14 day premium free trial, and I really like the series.

I am an anime n00b, but I've always liked animation: Family Guy, The Simpsons, South Park, etc. If I get hooked on this genre, I will keep the subscription, but there are so many programs, so I don't know where to start.

What are some other programs that this service offers that will really shape my new experience? I've been looking for new entertainment media for some time because everything I watch has become stale to me, so everyone's input would be great!

Thanks you in advance for any help I receive!

Bakemonogatari, it is a really good anime and here on crunchyroll! The second and third seasons are also on crunchy (risemonogatari and monogatari). This series is really unique and not 'stale' at all. Hope you like it!

My recommendation is to watch the classics. Usually between 1980's-2000

Hello and welcome to the anime world where you can be trapped forever :D

I see tht many others here are recommending a bunch of anime (and all of them are good). What I suggest (and what i did when I started anime) is that you watch one or a couple anime from all the different genres of anime first. You can get a feel of what type of anime you tend to enjoy more. Then you can look for more anime around that genre. I just found this easier to manage than have all these really good recommendations thrown at you at once and you can't decide which to actually watch first.

But personally, I would recommend watching Clannad and Angel Beats

If I had to compare it to anything, perhaps "Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad" (another cool drama that I unexpectedly enjoyed)....only in the sense that it's about young folks trying to overcome obstacles in order to make their life goals come to fruition.

How good is NHK? I don't know if I'm qualified to make that judgment simply because I'm generally not into drama. Having said that, I think it's one of the best damned series I've ever seen. The characters are absolutely endearing, it's charming and yet not too gushy(can be a little depressing from time to time), the story arc plays out rather well, and it's loaded with well constructed dark-comedy. I liked it so much that I watched it in it's entirety in one marathon sitting.

Don't wanna give out any plot spoilers here, but IM me if you want a brief synopsis or just hunt down some reviews. If you decide to tackle it, lemme know what you think.

Peace.

Avoid Boku no Pico, no matter how much other people try to convince you otherwise.

I'd suggest:

Steins;Gate
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Be careful they aired it out of order because they are dweebs)
Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (A movie sequel to Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)
Clannad and its sequel After Story
Angel Beats

And while I haven't watched either, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Attack on Titan come highly recommended
