I recommend Gintama, but dont watch it until you have watched some other anime, since its packed with references. It really is a great anime though!
Here are some more anime I recommend:
Attack on Titan ( There is lots of action and amazing fighting)
Hunter x Hunter (slow at the start, but it gets really awesome a little bit after. This is my favorite Shounen anime!)
Naruto/Naruto:Shippuden (2 of the biggest anime on crunchyroll, and for good reason. Id recommend skipping the filler arcs, but other than that they are pretty good! In total over 500 episodes)
Usagi Drop ( An amazing slice of life with beautiful animation and a heart-warming story.)
Tonari no Seki-kun: The Master of Killing Time (Animated shorts that are funny and great to watch. This anime shows you dont need dirty jokes to be funny!)

Yeah...+1 to Tonari no Seki-kun. That kid is my new hero. Astounding humor. The show is in it's infancy, but I sense it's going to take off in a big, big way. At least I hope so.

One of us. One of us.

OT, I would say shows like Attack on Titan will get new people pretty hooked, and it's right here in HD on croll.

Some other really highly renowned shows here on croll are Fate/Zero, Another, Durarara, Bakemonogatari, and Gurren Lagann.

There are many others, but those were some off the bat that would appeal to a noob.

ATTACK ON TITAN
Gurren Lagann
Naruto

I think these would be pretty good to start off with.

I'm a big fan of Gintama but that's a show for those more familiar with anime as there is a lot of spoof of other anime in it which you won't get.

It ultimately depends on taste.

For action I would suggest Attack on Titan. If you don't mind a bit (or a lot) of fanservice, Kill la Kill, and Gurren Lagann.

Horror- Another

Drama- Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, Angel Beats (also funny), Ano Natsu de Matteru, Usagi Drop

Romance- My Little Monster, ToraDora

This list is my picks, and these shows also fall under other categories. Really just pick something that looks interesting to you. Since you're new, fanservice may turn you off from a lot of shows here. You'll get used to it, whether you want to or not if you persist, but you will "occasionally" find one devoid of it (mostly). This site doesn't have every anime, and is missing some of my favorites, but provides some good stuff you probably never heard of.

While my tastes aren't so mainstream as to recommend anything like SAO, so you may not like what I like, I will list a few.
My all time favorite anime are (in approximate order):
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (Magical girl show, but really amazing. Maybe not so good for a new comer, but it is the greatest show ever).
http://www.crunchyroll.com/puella-magi-madoka-magica

Ef - A Tale of Memories and Ef - A Tale of Melodies (part of the same series, must watch in that order). This is a romantic drama. No real action, but it left me crying many times and extremely attached to the characters. Probably not for someone new to anime (new watchers tend to like action), but if you are into romance, I highly recommend it. The show contains 4 stories that are lightly woven together.

Steins;Gate. Really great show with a good amount of enjoyable content for any viewer. I'd recommend you make this your next watch. Some say it starts slow, but I've met very few who didn't love this show by the end. I just bought the movie for $130.

Clannad + After Story. Like ef, a romance/drama that will likely make you cry by the end. A really great story from beginning to end.

Welcome to the NHK. I consider this one a bit of a comedy, although it also has endearing characters and a great plot.

Okay. Let's see. Seeing as you want to test the waters on Crunchyroll to begin with, I suggest Hunter x Hunter. It's a long series, but very enjoyable. It also has the advantage that all of the episodes are available on Crunchyroll, as opposed to, say, Naruto, whose first 200-something episodes must be obtained elsewhere.

If I can give another suggestion, I personally enjoyed Gosick a lot.

don't take any offense when I say this, but... every single time I read a post about a person who is new to anime... they always write, "My friend recommended me SAO and now I'm a hardcore anime fan"... it confuses me so much... because it must mean this SAO anime is so great that it can convert people to like anime.

And I can't be of any help, because I thought SAO was mediocre... so if I were to recommend an equally mediocre anime, it would be, "Strike The Blood".

Well it was because it was a show many of the youngsters could relate too, even though it went from being a awesome idea, to a complete failure in the second half -.-

Uhm.. I dunno what kind of person you are, if you like romance, if you like comedy(Which based on watching south park etc. is pretty obvious xD) I'm just gonna recommend my all time favorite anime and my first *.*

My Bride is a Mermaid (Seto no Hanayome)
And if you can't decide between the dub or sub, go for the dub.. Really, it's awesome xD they nailed the male characters, the girls were okay, but the male were perfect xD But I dunno if this show is on Crunchyroll T_T

But if you want a show on CrunchyRoll which I'm sure that is on here, I would recommend:
The Ambition of Oda Nobuna, Bleach, The World God Only Knows, Demon King Daimao & The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
There are many good ones on the site;)

Hmmm, new to anime using sao as a gateway, I won't go to nuts with reccomendations,
Log horizon- great show, kinda slower than sao but same idea.
Attack on Titan - great action drama, insanely popular ATM.
Naruto/shippuden- can't go wrong with some naruto if your a newbie in the anime world.
Hunterxhunter- good action adventure, a ton of episodes.
Strike the blood- awesome show, vampires, werewolves and tons of fighting.

If you have Netflix instant access checkout. Kenichi: the mighty deciple and they also have both full metal alchemist and fairy tail too.
Overall for a newer anime fan I would reccomend checking out the uber popular shows first, most people on here will reccomend a bunch of stuff from drama to action but IMO newer mainstream fans should stick with the popular stuff first.

Instead of watching Gintama, One Piece, Naruto, and the rest of the shows with 300+ episodes, watch the first couple episodes of these:

High School of the Dead (not available on CR, but watch it anyway on a free streaming site): Action, gore, zombies, gravity defying boobies, and overall, an amazing series. It is dubbed, so that is a plus if you are new to anime.

Fate Zero: I am currently watching this, and it is good/great. Not quite GREAT, but it is great. It's basically the difference between saying it is great and screaming it is great while shaking the hell out of whoever you are arguing with. Awesome series, definitely worth watching. This is also dubbed, but the subbed version is WAY better.

Seitokai Yakuindomo: If you like dirty jokes, this show is for you. The characters are great and the sex jokes are interesting and abundant.

Arpeggio of Blue Steel: The animation is odd, but HOLY S**T, the plot is incredible! Cute girls turn into/are warships, the action is intense, and you'll never see the major plot twists coming. The series is just great. It really is something else.

The Pet Girl of Sakurasou: You've got a world-famous artist who decides she wants to draw manga instead of painting incredible pictures. She is a high school girl that is incapable of taking care of herself. To top it off, she moves into Sakurasou, the student dorm for all the "problem" students. If the first two episodes don't suck you in, then that genre obviously isn't for you.

Attack on Titan: Imagine this: The remnants of humanity have retreated behind walls to protect themselves from 3-15 meter Titans (human like beings) that consume humans for no apparent reason. Humanity is on the brink of extinction, and their only option is to fight back. Just watch the first episode. The hype this series has received isn't a joke.

Walkure Romanze: Jousting and gorgeous girls. Give the first episode a shot. You (probably, almost certainly) won't regret it. I didn't expect much, but it was an amazing series. I definitely enjoyed it.

Nagi No Asuraka: Some people live underwater. Some people also live above water. I put this series off for a while. And I regret doing so. There isn't much action, but it is captivating and really sucks you in.

I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job: You've got a guy that failed to be a hero and a demon that failed to succeed her father and become the next demon lord. Did I mention that Fina (the failure demon lord) is the most adorable anime character of all time ever? Okay, so that may not be true, but she is really awesome. But, be prepared for fan service. Fina, and most of the female cast members have big boobs and Fina's sense of modesty is lacking...

If you get hooked on any of these series, keep watching them. There are plenty of shows that are similar to them that will make that CR membership worth it. I tried to list off my favorite shows from multiple genres that someone new to anime (that doesn't mind watching subs) would likely enjoy. There are so so so many more incredible series that are definitely worth watching, but these are just a few of the recent ones that are available on CR right now that you might enjoy. Welcome to the wonderful world of anime!

Edit: Some honorable mentions by others that I have to second and third:
Toradora: Just watch it. You can't go wrong with the palm top tiger, Minorin, and Ami. Unlike most of the series that follow, this is on CR right now, so watch it!
Another: This series was incredible. Amazing. I bought it immediately after watching it. But it is really dark. If you don't like dark/horror stuff, don't watch it.
Clannad: A slice of life classic. There is a bit of magic stuff mixed in there and it works perfectly. It's a wonderful series. The same goes for Kanon (2006).
Elfen Lied: There lots of blood and fear and pain (both emotional and physical) and it is a classic in my book.
