Why is all new anime always censored?? Is it because it's simulcast and this stuff can't be shown on Japanese TV? Is there a way to get subbed, uncensored anime? I don't know if I'm weird for asking, but it sucks when you get into it and all of a sudden someone's head gets cut off and they black out the screen as it rolls away. Older anime was awesome for always pushing the boundaries and having a lot of twisted scenes. Also boobs :p

Censoring has kind of always been around. VHS/DvD/B-Ray is pretty much the way to get rid of censoring. It's the TV station/Studio that does that censoring, and it is more or less a tease saying "Want more? Buy our goods."

Why censor Gore which is so obviously supposed to be there? Its just so stupid. I agree with OP, if you've got an Obvious Tit/Vagoo fanservice shlock show, the least you can do is give them what they ask for. Always soooooooo stingy about showing us the Nipple, its always the nipple, why the nipple, why can't you show the nipple? What did the nipple do to you huh? Did a hard nipple kill your parents as it passed by on a cold day or what!?

As for Gore, if its going to glorify violence show the aftermath, otherwise you look like a bunch of pussies.

I think the OP is more asking, why do horror anime these days seems so much more censored than say anime 10 - 20 years ago? I am not sure if it is really the case, but it does seem that way doesn't it?

I personally have been hearing more things about like parental complaints and right wing movements in Japan, or rather I have been reading Japanese otaku (on like 2chan or whatever) complaining about parental complaints and right wing movements. Either way, as conservative as the Japanese social structure and government is, it's entertainment section is largely liberal. However, it seems as the years go on due to government reforms or whatever, they are putting more and more conservative pressure on what can be shown in media.

Most of the horror released with widespread gore over the years was direct to video OVAs. The only exceptions I can think of off the top of my head are Higurashi/Umineko, maybe Mirai Nikki, and Elfen Lied.

Probably the best programming blocks for anime with heavy gore would be AT-X and similar subscription-based channels or late night blocks. Unfortunately, harem and perv shows dominate them.

I guess the mantra would be "the more people that can see the show, the higher the DVD sales" thus anime are tailored to fit as many television networks as possible?

A lot of broadcast anime that are released as "horror" outside of the three I mentioned are rather tame and censored even when compared to a show like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure..

Censoring is because of simulcasts which come from public channels as opposed to paid channels.
Some censoring (even on the paid channels) is also because they want you to buy the blu-rays and DVDs.

Much in the same way the US censors a lot of sexual imagery, Japan tends to censor violence and (particularly) blood. While it might not be that obvious from shonen anime, watch another more violent genre, or look at video games: in the Japanese version of Metal Gear Rising everyone with cybernetic enhancements has Raiden's artificial white blood from MGS4 (compare to the international version, where nobody (even Raiden himself) has it) except one enemy for illustration purposes. Likewise, in No More Heroes, there is no blood in the Japanese version even though enemies are blood pinatas in the international version.

Plus the public airwave / DVD sale thing.

is in that block quoted.

Japanese government and law changes over the last 10+ years have made censoring A LOT of things heavier. Not to mention changes in the rules on the Japanese TV channels that want most if not all nudity censored, less to no blood, definitely no guts and gore. That said I even remember some shows from the 90's that the TV version didn't have much blood, if any at all, but buy the VHS version all of a sudden it got bloodier.

Same thing happens now, TV version will be censored but the DvD/B-Ray version is not censored. So it is one way that the studio and TV stations make money.

Its possible that the murderer Tsutomu Miyazaki is to blame. He, before his execution, along with a few others have attempted to blame the violence in anime and movies as an excuse for their vicious crimes. I seem to recall a few studios promising to tone back the violence after public outrage from the trails. But it has been a long time and my memories might be hazy.

I remember anime when it was more liberal and showed stuff. I mean the anime X tv had alot of blood and ayashi no ceres did as well also did higurashi and shiki
Hellsing was bloody and violently gory. I miss those old anime days when japan didnt really care about anime being overly bloody.

Funimation's simulcasts are still censored, EVS or not. (For the record, I am an Elite Video Subscriber).

They don't obtain the uncensored version unless they license for home video. Even then, the only chance free viewers have of seeing the uncensored version is via the dub, if it is made available to them. If a uncensored sub is made available (as was done for Freezing, it is only for EVS.
