I agree with this. It's stupid, because you KNOW what's happening behind the black blur, anyway. I find it tolerable for the most part, but then there are animes like the recent Jojo's Bizarre Adventures. I mean, you can barely even tell what's going on during fights because the censorship is so ridiculous. And what tick me off, is I can't find a place that has it uncensored. Very irritating stuff.

Some of it may genuinely be justified (IE, you're not going to show full frontal nudity on basic cable networks) but in a lot of cases it's simply about money. The promise of uncensored gore and fanservice sells BRs/DVDs to the hardcore otaku crowd, and that's really all there is to it.

Just be glad they don't tone down the violence to meet regulations instead of just covering it up. At least this way the uncut footage still exists.

They don't obtain the uncensored version unless they license for home video. Even then, the only chance free viewers have of seeing the uncensored version is via the dub, if it is made available to them. If a uncensored sub is made available (as was done for Freezing, it is only for EVS.

Ah, yeah. That's what I was thinking of. Freezing.

Why is anime censored? Not only to the money, not to the law. If you really wanna know it look at this interesting article (Japanese):

Because Japanese Society has very strict rules regarding sax and violins on television.

Thanks for all the responses! After thinking about it, a lot of the older Anime I watched was from vhs and dvds my older brother had. It gets annoying at times because that's a selling point of these shows... I'm not huge on super gory stuff, but pushing the envelope a little is cool.

As everyone else has said, blurays/dvds are a big part of it.

Also, it depends on the time slot really. Stations will have to censor some scenes because younger audiences could be watching during that hour. In the late time slots however, that's a different story, studios are free to show more gore/nudity.

I just wish there was a way for CR to get the uncensored version since this is a website and they can post anything on here without getting flack.

Three words "Youth Ordinance Bill". The fact that the new bill may be blocking some shows from being too violent or sexual must be considered with the want to make money off of home video sales.

So is that premise essentially that they self censor because they don't want to scare off the show sponsors through broadcast of the authors original creation that was unrestricted in regards to expression... because it might freak out some viewers?

... I guess that might be true, I know someone who had only seen the anime version of "Astarotte no Omocha!" and thought that was really risky and perverse (and all this from a self confessed lolicon), and all I could think was "try reading the original source material (manga), 'Lotte no Omocha!'", (probably renamed the anime since it changed so much from the original).

So basically the censorship is appeasing the "Lowes Hardware" (http://goo.gl/f8E77M) of the Asian world

Two bad they can't make two versions of the anime series.

Start off by showing the censored one then show the uncensored one afterwards.

Usually the anime company would just make an uncensored version I think. When sent to the broadcast company they will then censor it to their standards for their station(s).

CR probably gets their anime from the broadcast companies, not the anime companies, since it is a simulcast and all.

That is at least my thought on that.
