Oooh, that's a good point. I probably wouldn't have even thought about it like that. I suppose the same can be said for ecchi anime, too, since the viewer is watching that anime with the intent of seeing some action, if you know what I mean. For anime that I don't have the intention of buying a DVD/BR set for, it still is kind of a shame. :/ I'd imagine that there is more censorship nowadays simply because more people are complaining about it, but the thing about marketing and sales was a new idea to me. That makes lots of sense too!

Agreed. I have no problems with censorship per see as long as it is cleverly done. But so much of it lately has been of the ham fisted variety. But for horror/gore most` people seem to have forgotten that less is more. The human imagination is far more scarey that shock TV.

This may not be news to most of the people reading this, but most anime that isn't in prime time or on NHK is essentially television time purchased by the production committee for the broadcast of the show. As such, it is in their best interest to produce programs for TV that will encourage the spending of money.

As time has passed, your standard T&A-type series have moved away more and more from the classic, discreet type of censorship they used to use; one theory (that I think is probably true) is that it makes it more obvious what it is the viewer is missing, so that it further encourages buying the uncensored versions on BD/DVD. After all, conveniently placed steam might not be edited out, but a big black box on the screen probably will. I'm pretty sure the horror/gore producers have caught on to that idea, so they are probably doing the same thing.

It also is true that laws on visual depictions of sexuality and violence have become more restrictive over the last decade, so that programs that would have been totally acceptable in 2002 aren't anymore.

Also, just for reference (since this comes up a lot in CR forums): Crunchyroll doesn't censor programs on their site. Or, at least, I don't know of a single time they ever have. If there's censorship, its because the broadcaster they are licensing the show from has the censorship on their broadcast. In some cases, there are other broadcasts without censorship that they did not license (generally from cable providers that don't have the rights to license the broadcast), although, increasingly, even the cable broadcasts are censored as well.

I tried to watch Terraformers... but my goodness. If they want me to buy the DVDs, which will probably never come out in my Country, they aren't doing a good job of it. Kind of makes Cruchyroll a pointless place for me. Unless I want to watch Sports or Comedy Anime.

I'm so freaking tired of that ridiculous censorship, even Netflix is showing the real anime and not some retarded censored version of it
Americans are bigots and intolerant, (unless it is homo content) but not even them are censoring anime -.-

The networks that broadcast the anime censor it from what I've heard. At the same time though I think some broadcast versions are intentionally censored to give viewers more incentive to purchase blu-rays.

It tends to get censored because there will always be some jack ass who wants to spoil it for everyone else by complaining

Anyone just consider that in general anime seems to be targeting younger audiences.

It's not just the aim for getting a wider range of audience for the networks/simulcasts or to help the dvd/bluray sales with uncut version. It's actually about the new stricter laws that have changed over the years.

An example is dragonball z to kai. Have you noticed theres a lot less blood/empathises of death or killing? DBZ had a lot more blood and cursing about actually killing the characters.
Another example overseas is how batman dropped the use of guns, i.e modern guns. If you look back at the 90's batman, they had actual realistic guns but with justice league at the start of 2000, they had energy weapons instead and virtually no realistic guns at all.

Just annoying when you know the show deserves it's rating but is censored anyway like horror.

I miss the good old days when they could get away with uncensored nudity and just have it be humorous or part of the show. Take Ranma 1/2 for example. There's tasteful nudity all through that show, and it doesn't seem like it's hurt anyone. I don't see any emotionally scarred children anywhere do to seeing the human body.
