What do you really think of Censorship on CR.

Limiting CR's anime catalog to keep the site kid friendly not only affect viewers that want to watch mature shows, but it also ultimately doesn't solve the problem. Sure, CR would be more kid friendly, but those same kids would just find somewhere else to watch immature anime or porn or whatever. The issue does not lie with CR, it lies with underage children and their parents. Parents allow their children to have computers in their rooms, completely unsupervised, which allows those children the freedom to do whatever they want on the internet. However, if parents were to keep the computers where they are constantly visible and enable parental controls their children wouldn't be visiting inappropriate websites or viewing mature videos. That's not to say those kids won't find ways to get a hold of inappropriate content, of course, but at least the parents are taking action. It drives me nuts when parents complain about, "I wasn't aware this website was so inappropriate, my kids should not be on this kind of website. It should be shut down/censored so my children will no longer be subjected this kind of content!" It's not the fault of the website, it's the fault of the parents for not paying attention to what their kids are doing on the internet. You can't censor the whole damn internet. It's never going to happen. However, you can be in control of what your kids are doing on the internet. Or, in this case, you can be in control of what you watch on CR by reading the description of the show, looking at the genres (does it say "ecchi"?), or even blocking mature content. "I didn't know this show would be so sexual." Did you check to see if there was mature content? "Well, no..." Then that's your fault.

Bankshot Stuff...

I'm not sure where to start with that post, its all over the place. Try not speaking in riddles and with clarity when you are debating or trying to prove a point instead.

You post a lot of assumptions and fallacies as well.

Doesn't matter though, we seem to agree that restrictions wouldn't hurt although its still in CR's hands as to whether or not they choose to do anything. There are ideas out there.

No one said anything about restrictions for adults so I'm not sure why you even brought that one up. The topic is starting to get convoluted anyways. Don't see a reason to proceed anymore having said all I could think of.

Personally, I'm against all forms of censorship, but since CR isn't public property, it has every right to do what it wants including censoring explicit material. I just believe that there are better methods of preventing minors from watching or look at adult material here without ruining the experience for the grown ups.

I'm not so sure "parents of young children" are the ones who primarily buy subscriptions to the site. Since that's a rather strong financial motive, it seems somewhat arbitrary to limit the catalogue to what is typically considered 'child appropriate'.

How difficult is it to add a pin number for certain shows, that may be unsuitable for young children? .

Well, they could add a third tier of membership that absolutely requires a credit card (or something similar) to sign up. You know, the same non-barrier but fortunate legal way out every website with adult content uses. Something at the very least that could not be attained via surveys.

I'm still new here, but I always thought the point of Crunchyroll was to provide a legal and industry-supportive method of watching anime. To that effect, I would think they could and should snap up every anime they can. But really, which kinds of anime should be supported?

Super ecchi stuff might be amusing, but it's not something I would pay money for. Ever. It's the studios producing great anime that I worry about. As far as the other content goes - super gory, controversial and so forth - I wouldn't mind if it was well done. Hell, look at Akira, pretty much the reason all of us that are over 13 years old are here in the first place.

This.
Regardless, it's usually the Japanese broadcast that comes censored. The uncensored comes later on blu ray.

I personally hope that CR never decides to censor what anime they show. However, I'd be fine with the idea that you need to be a subscriber and state that you are of a certain age for your country to see some content. You'll never be able to fully stop kids from getting access to stuff they "shouldn't see", but having reasonable measures in place will stop some and is prudent from a legal point of view as well.

Both my wife and I enjoy watching ecchi shows if they are done well and have a good plot. I also enjoy darker themed shows that while they may not have much sexual content, are really geared more for an adult audience. I'm glad that CR carries these shows. I also understand that since CR carries these shows, that there may be some shows on here that I personally find the content offensive or I'm squeamish about. I'm fine that those things are on CR, since I know what I'm squeamish about may be something others like or are alright with. And conversely, things I'm fine with and like to watch is stuff some others may find offensive. One thing to remember with anime is that it is written for a Japanese audience with Japanese sensibilities. They have different views on sex and nudity than a lot of other countries.

That said, the stuff on CR is mild compared to stuff any teen in the US at least can get access to without having to do anything more than click a box saying they are over 18. Yes, Japan has some particular fetishes that are played around with in some of the anime that squick out those of us from other countries. like their fascination with peeing yourself (to bring one up from the anime that started the thread). But, I don't think any of the stuff you can see on CR is going to warp a young mind.

I remember when I was a young teen, way before the Internet. I got exposed to the concept of incest in some books from the school library. While my parents didn't have any porn, my friend's parents did and I just looked at it at their house. Basically, if your kid wants to see stuff, they will find a way to see it.

I've said this once and I will say it again. Just because its animated does not mean its for children. CR posted the warning for a reason; either heed it or do not. If you want to go on a holy crusade against ecchi anime you will not find many people willing to back you're cause here. Frankly I like ecchi anime, why? Because I am comfortable with my sexuality and myself I do not find it abhorrent. I probably would not watch it in public though because pretentious people like to judge people like myself. The internet can not be policed to make it "child friendly" CR would lose a lot of members if they removed everything even slightly offencive.

Heh, it ain't Crunchy's fault, they're just streaming whats aired in Japan.

As far as I know, they don't have anything to do with the censoring of the anime.

What I don't understand is how Queensblade first season is uncensored and the second season is totally F'd up with censoring. I'd like to have the option as a paying member and an adult, to watch anime as the artist intended for it to be viewed, and if that is to include nude scenes, then so be it! I guess that if the streaming rights are for the censored version only, then there is nothing that CR can do about it, but if an uncensored version is available, I should have the option to watch it.

Shows are already censored enough. In a lot of the ecchi on this website I've seen fog cover ups, censor bars, and character faces hiding inappropriate material. When I tried to watch Another I had to register on the site and verify that I am indeed 18+. And even then I had to turn maturity ratings off just to watch it without a warning popping up every episode. If parents really don't want their kids watching violent or disturbing or sexual stuff they should monitor their kids' activities. Yes, some stuff will slip through but with diligence most won't. And if a parent lets their kid watch anime you think is too graphic, that's just too bad. It's their kid.

Closing this as it's quite old and there were several more recent very similar topics (some of which have also been closed).
