personally love studio ghibli films.

the drawing is really finely detailed, especially the backgrounds and everything in Howl's bedroom (look at how the pillow is drawn to the smallest detail).

I rewatched Howl's Moving Castle last night, and I still get that magical feeling of being entranced in a totally different world and environment. The realistic and unique characters, the exceptional dialogues and meaningful storylines.

It's truly a work of art, and being an art appreciator, I really enjoy watching Studio Ghibli films.

I agreee...
I love it so much that I have a collection of studio ghinli films..
They are amazing..

There are none, all animes are crap.

Really depends on what you mean by a "good story."

If you're talking about getting a good emotional feel, I'd suggest White Album and WA2.

Story in K-On?
What's the story?
There isn't one. not really :P
It's just an anime about cute girls doing school stuff, slice of life stuff. And the thing they were aiming for that could've made a story, never happens.
It's just a moe fanservice anime.
No story whatsoever.

Don't get me wrong though, I love K-On.
But I'm not one of those people who think there's more to it than moe fanservice or whatever I should call it.

One Piece

Mos often than not, people can relate to the straw hats.
- They have their differences
- They have their opinions on how to tackle missions
- They're not perfect, they argue.
- There's a hot head willing to do anything to protect his teammates.

Kuroko's Basketball
- Despite the fictional moves, people rely on each other to score and land a victory.

Hamatora
- If you ignore how the 5th episode is built, then you kinda get that there's characters (with strange names) are just like the fighters in Tomorrow People. Which they use their innate powers to protect civilians.

The term is very subjective and completely dependent on the genre and style you prefer to watch.

Anime that I would recommend you at least sample include Angel Beats, Anohana, Death Note, Attack On Titan, Sword Art Online, Fairy Tail, The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Steins;Gate is the first thing that comes to my mind... but that may be because that was the last anime I watched. XD

Other good story-based anime: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Madoka Magica, Fate/Zero, Attack on Titan, Toradora!, Baccano!, and Code Geass.

I want to know which anime, in your opinion of course, has the best story? An anime that really connects with the audience.

Ive given up trying to sort out my ultimate favorite. Here are shows that I've enjoyed broken down by genera

Romance
Clannad
Clannad has a conclusive ending with a heavy dose of drama. The situations are rather unrealistic and tailored to get an emotional response (seriously. I have never seen anyone deal with such misfortune), but I found myself crying like a baby during many different episodes and I greatly enjoyed the series as a whole. The ending to this show gets mixed reviews but you'd have to play the visual novel to really understand why it went down the way it did.

Kare Kano
Nice comedy/drama/romance. Again the main character has a rather unbelievable dark past but it is used very well in the story. The anime ran into some budget issues towards the end and literally resorted to drawing characters on Popsicle sticks and moving them around a background. You are definitely going to want to read the manga afterwards. It goes a lot farther in their lives and has a conclusive ending.

Ai Yori Aoshi
One of the first anime shows I ever purchased. It's a comedy / romance / harem but with a twist. The main character isn't an indecisive moron who can't decide who he wants as a love interest. This series is very unique. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it since. There is two seasons of anime. This is another title you're going to want to read the manga to. Much better fan service and conclusion to the story.

Drama
Usagi Drop
Nice light story of a man who ends up adopting the illegitimate love child of his grandpa. Maybe not the right series for you if you don't like slow, action less stories. Once again. You'll have to read the manga to get an ending. Ending is controversial. 50/50 split. I personally liked it.

Koi Kaze
Little known series released by Geneon a while back. Has to do with a 27 year old brother who falls in love with his 15 year old sister after she moves back in with him from her mom's place. Lots of angst and drama but it is very well drawn out. If you're easily offended by incest or underage sex I'd avoid it but you'll be missing out on a great story.

Ecchi
To Love RU
The king of softcore pornography. There are three tv series and an OVA that i've seen and they get exponentially dirtier as they progress.
High levels of nudity. Good comedy. The first 2 seasons can get repetitive as they are pretty episodic for the most part and are just full of running jokes but darkness actually introduces a storyline.

Highschool DxD
Boobs. All different sizes. There was a story?

Samurai Girls
Rather stupid story but great looking girls. You won't be paying much attention to the plot.

Sci-Fi
Crest/Banner of the Stars / Banner of the Stars II/ Banner of the stars III
Starts off slow but it's a VERY well written series. Nice space battles, good suspense, a perfect amount of light humor, and a romance that could change the shape of the universe. It's an older title but I hope you're not someone who wants something just for the animation. Author just released another book after a near 10 year hiatus but I highly doubt we will see an end to this series. Certainly not in anime format.

Infinite Ryvius
Kids get stranded on a secret spaceship and are attacked by the military trying to cover up it's existence.

Action
Sword art online
My guilty pleasure. Good brainless fun as long as you don't think to deep into the story.

Blue Gender
Older series. Rather horrid animation at times and really violent. The ending is a bit of a "wtf huh?" but it ended in the manner I wanted it to. The main thing I enjoyed was the development of Marlene and Yuji's relationship. The way that it wasn't afraid to deal with mature themes such as sex and homosexuality (to a very small extent) was refreshing.

Horror
Dance in the Vampire Bund
I like vampires and I like loli. I like loli vampires even more. Lots of supernatural monsters fighting it out.

Hellsing OVA
A unique story involving Vampires, Zombies, and Nazis. Lots of over the top gore.

When I hear "best story" I start thinking objectively of what shows the most deft craftsmanship.
When I hear "that connects with the audience" I think of emotional, subjective associations.

To the first, I'd say things like Berserk, Death Note, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, Kara no Kyoukai, Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze, and Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade.

To the second, I'd say things like Wolf Children, Kyousougiga, Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, Haibane Renmei, Eden of the East, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, Black Lagoon, and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

The first list is of cold iron. It's analytical and deliberate.
The second list is of hot iron. It's emotional and resonating.

Not sure which interpretation you intended.

I would partially switch this list. The animation and art of TTGL, Kyousougiga, Serial Experiments Lain, and Madoka Magica show craftsmanship and effort. They put a lot of time, effort, and emotion into these works.

Berserk as an anime, I would also put on that emotional level. The story itself is well crafted, and I love it. But it's the characters that make berserk, and it hits you on emotional levels because of that. How much you care about the characters depends on the characters and the story being told.

So.......I believe those two definitions are both a part of what he's asking about. Aaaand all of the recommendations are spot on.

Really, lots of anime with great story exists, the question is "what great stories do you want to watch right now?"

Well for me the best in that field as far as series go is the KEY anime like Clannad and Angel Beats. Asfar as films go the ones by Studio Ghibly like Spirited Away and Howls Moving Castle or films by Mamoru Hasoda like Wolf Children or The Girl Who Leapt Through Time are the best
