Haha, I don't usually care about the mistakes. I mean we're human after all. We're bound to make mistakes. On the other hand, I too am watching Naruto and is on Episode 214, and I haven't noticed any major mistakes. Maybe because I'm too into the anime xD

Out of curiosity, do you recognize these mistakes because:

A) You're comparing the episodes to fansubs.
B) You're comparing the episodes to English dubs.
C) You're a Japanese speaker.
D) Other (please explain).

Like I don't think this is a mistake I've been wondering in the subs why does Naruto call the toads frogs is it a joke or is he actually saying frog in Japanese and also yes it's mostly grammatical errors like they use the wrong wording in places and sentences end up making no sense.

I don't watch Naruto so I don't know exactly what they said where but if you give me an episode number and a time stamp I can tell you what they said.

Frog is kaeru 蛙 while toad is hiki 蟇 or hikigaeru 蟇蛙(toad frog). I would have to hear the audio to figure out which word they actually used.

Technically however, the difference between frogs and toads is VERY subtle. Aside from the very common varieties, it takes a herpetologist to tell them apart! And who knows if the animators draw a brown frog, is it a frog or a toad? That doesn't sound terribly important to me or is this an important distinction in Naruto???

When I see the title "Lift your game up, Crunchyroll", I can think of a number of things more critical to that end than this.

How about NOT posting spoilers to the most popular anime right in the header when you first come to the site?
"How does the hero deal with the death of this important character?" Get a free trial to watch episode 394 and find out!

Bush league.

Another way they can step up their game is to bring in older anime and more OVAs and Movies.

And yet another way is to get a more reliable player. Why does it stick if I'm gone from the computer more than 5 minutes and I have to refresh? Why does it sometimes just jump to the next episode on its own, while I'm in the middle of watching an episode?

And how about properly cataloging the anime under Alphabetical Order? Why are there so many shows in the main show drop down area that aren't properly listed under their letters? I don't feel like having to search the entire show catalog to find an anime I want to watch.

And why is there no feature to block people on the forums who annoy you?

I'm just saying, this is some elementary stuff that not even backwater pirate sites do. Sure, it's not critical, but it just makes for a better experience. You shouldn't be getting outclassed by guys in their basements.

But, seriously...stop spoiling anime in your headers. No one needs to know that Danzo tricked Hanzo before they actually get to episode 348 on Naruto...

And a buffer bar. Why is there no buffer bar. Who thought "nah, buffer bars aren't important on web players."

Humans aren't perfect.

Even science textbooks have tons of grammatical errors and incorrect formulae/information and they always get updated with newer editions. In addition, each textbook has 100's of qualified scientists reading over it, yet there are still mistakes.

So I actually appreciate the CR translators for being able to translate from Japanese-to-English with minimal grammatical errors.

Alright, two things.

First, the subtitles in these old episodes are hardcoded, they weren't added by CR.
Second, I'm now really confused:

Edit:

Oh, found it. Around 2-2:30 when Naruto's trying the summoning jitsu and yelling about frogs. I assume that's a literal translation and he's just being impolite. I can't pick a word out of a string of foreign dialogue like that though.

I'm pretty sure in 57 the big toad yells at Naruto for calling him a frog or something.

Yeah, here:

I don't know the exact mechanics of how CR does their translations, but I do know that they're generally done in a short window of time. When time is a factor, any translator is going to have challenges, since you can't necessarily check everything for 100% accuracy.

Beyond that, there's the fact that Japanese grammar is significantly different from English, so sentences have to be reworded to make sense. Sometimes, however, the sentence comes out awkward, and nobody catches it (it might be grammatically correct, but confusing, or it might actually be wrong, and it gets missed by the translation checker).

Then there's the localization component; for instance, if a character says akuma, you might translate it as "demon" or "monster", but, in some contexts, it might make sense to change it to "jerk" or "bitch", since calling a person a demon has a different contextual meaning in English. Or if a yakuza calls his boss aniki, he probably doesn't literally mean that the boss is his big brother. Most translation is based on the idea of conveying the idea of the dialogue, not the literal meaning.

In short, I would say that CR's translations are about as good as any translations produced in a similar time frame. I've never seen one that was truly unreadable, and the errors are few enough that they don't tend to affect my enjoyment. Occasionally, I do see a weird thing (usually gender pronoun matching issues) but it doesn't really bother me.
