I don't think an update is in the works. It's disappointing that CR hasn't supported their Roku customers over the years. CR developers have had since 2012 to improve their customer experience, and despite repeated request for a status update to support 1080p, no official announcements have been made. The coming soon line just doesn't cut it.

As much as I enjoy the content, I will likely will not renew my premium membership when it comes up for renewal.

Although I'm usually all about getting information, I can understand why they're not going for specifics in this case.

Last summer they did announce that they had a submitted update, suggesting that they assumed it would be verified by Roku and released within a week or so. It got rejected. A few months back, they said they'd resubmitted. Nothing came of it.

I suspect that they're not going to make any more concrete announcements until the new app gets approval and actually comes out. The occasional "We are working on it, and taking Roku's suggestions on board" means a lot more in this case than "Well, we're submitting it again".

That has been the hope since I started this thread. But news is not forthcoming.

Hey guys, I resubscribed to CR when I saw there was a CR channel on my Roku and since I couldn't load anime in 1080p I contacted the support and they said 1080p wasn't supported on it yet so I asked for them if I should cancel my subscription and wait for the update on 1080p and they responded with :

Hello,
Thank you for your follow up.

iOS will currently only stream up to 480p. If you have an Apple TV, this will stream up to 1080p.

We're working on a build of the Roku app that will play up to 1080p and we're expecting to submit the build for review to Roku today.

Regards,

So hopefully everyone in this thread will be happy soon :)!

Hopefully the third time will be the charm. (The previous two submissions were not approved).

Anyone know if a new build has been approved yet for the CR app in HD?

I just got a Roku 3 and I'm loving the device, but not having CR videos in HD when I use it as a Premium member is very disappointing... guess I'll need to stick with my, buggy, PS3 CR app until an HD version gets approved.

One has been submitted about a week ago, or at least I heard that reported. I'm giving it another week or two to see if something shows up released from Roku or not.

Do you make sure to wait until you see two dots after the vid is released before letting it play? They put out the 360 res encode first, and the 480 shows up a little later... I agree that if you watch with one dot it is not too pretty, but 2 dots is DVD quality and that's pretty darn good. (It's just not BD quality).

But I must be getting old, I really can't see much difference between CR's 480 and Funi's 720... Not having HD (yet) isn't much of a concern to me.

Ah, I see, thanks for the reply! I hope it gets approved soon and works well if it does.

As to the dots, yeah, I have two dots showing up since I'm watching stuff from the last couple seasons mostly at the moment. It looks about DVD quality to me with the two dots like you said. Though, I have very good eyesight and notice when even Blu-rays have video quality issues.

I have a PS3 as well and noticed right away the Roku video was not HD. While the streaming quality is "good," it does not look anywhere near as clear and vibrant as the HD stream via the PS3 app; which has its own issues with the memory leaking. I would just stream the videos via HDMI from my laptop to my TV, but that too has issues. Not only is that more hassle, but videos tend to freeze playing, even 480p, with CR's servers through the PC. I know the streaming devices use different servers and I rarely have any issues with those over the PC based ones. I guess for now the least of the evils is the broken PS3 app for HD video that at least plays without freezing and needing a page reload.

Almost all of the hd tvs now will upscale 360 & 480p to 720p & 1080p nowdays . I just set my roku as if its hooked to 1080p instead of 720p . They even talked about it once on HD Nation (may that excellent show R.I.P) .

In one of the topics in the Premium Members section of the forum, I linked to a thread in the Roku forums where a rep from Roku stated about a year ago that app approval generally took about 2 weeks.

Based on that, if we haven't seen a new app by this time next week, we can start preparing to be disappointed again (and then turn to being fully bummed out if June arrives and it still has not appeared).

From what I've seen around the forum, it appears the Apple TV is the best bet at the moment for a mostly problem free 1080p experience with CR. Apparently the OUYA isn't bad either, although there aren't enough users there for to say for certain.

Yep, they cancelled it, made it a segment on Tekzilla, then made it available separately again, and then cancelled it again. We're also down to only one episode per week of Tekzilla now.

Discovery network ruins everything it touches...cancel good shows and run off good people on other shows too.
