I don't hate fanservice but I don't love it either. I feel as long as the story is not affected by the fanservice its all good. But anime like high school of the dead, were it is just distracting. I want to know what the people have to say

I like fanservice -- both male and female fanservice -- and I don't think it takes away from the show (usually). The only "fanservice" I really don't care for it is when it involves seriously young boys and girls. Too creepy and pedo for me. A show like Ro-Kyu-Bu had too many "odd" undertones for my tastes.

The real question is whether most, if not all, fanservice is misogynistic or not. That's the real question. Whether it commodifies women, and some men, and sets unrealistic expectations in real life human relationships to the point of where some people would rather marry pillows.

Those are the burning questions...

So besides the nefarious pre-teen stuff, done tastefully, fanservice can add a bit of awesome humanity to the otherwise dull, wretched existence that we all wake up to each day.

It depends on the series for me. If I feel like the fanservice present distracts from the characters or story significantly, then it becomes a problem. Not too many series alienate me with fanservice though, so I find it mostly harmless. Let me put it this way, if a family friendly show like Bunny Drop suddenly started throwing in panty shots or weird and inappropriate stuff, then it's a problem for me. Basically, so long as the fanservice does not feel way out of place with the story, then it will not bother me much, if at all, and sometimes may spice up a more adult oriented series.

Edit: As others, correctly, point out, there's a wide range of fanservice in anime. I'm primarily speaking about sexual fanservice here, but I also find non-sexual fanservice distracting when it is not well integrated. If I find any kind of fanservice alienating from the aspects of the series I most enjoy, then it hurts the show for me. Thankfully, I've not encountered very many series where the fanservice takes me out of enjoying the show, and in most cases it adds to my enjoyment by complimenting the other aspects well. Execution is key; halfhearted fanservice can hurt a series, but when it is well done it can only help.

I don't have a problem with fanservice what so ever, but a lot of people don't understand that fanservice doesn't just mean girls showing off their bodies.

A lot of people just don't understand what fanservice means

Gore in a horror anime is fanservice

Getting cars guns and even planes perfectly right is fanservice

Heck even cool Mecha battles is fanservice

Jst wish everyone would stop throwing term around without fully understanding it

I think it depends on the given show. For some shows, it's okay for example Kill la Kill uses it for comedy and had some for both sexs. On the other hand shows like High School of the Dead...just no.

Love the hell out of it. However, if it is literally nothing but fanservice it can be a bit of a let down. I like my fanservice to be coupled with something, like an engaging story, or fun action, or good comedy.

Also there is a time and a place for fanservice. I hate it when fanservice is randomly thrown in. For example, in an early episode of Coppelion:

Something like that is pretty tasteless, imo.

So I love fanservice, but I want it to be paired with something else and to not be randomly forced in.

If you took out fanservice from Highschool of the Dead, I can guarantee you it would not even retain a fraction of its popularity. 80% of that show was fanservice.

What uncletim said. Fanservice includes but is not inclusively limited to titillation.

Shows like Lucky Star and Nyarko-san or any other reference heavy show IS FANSERVICE.
Robotics;Notes having a divergence meter in it was fanservice.
Girls Und Panzer having a Maus in it was fanservice.
Any time a sports anime gets into sporting jargon or famous historical sporting events that is fanservice.

Saying you don't like fanservice is exactly the same as saying you don't like having a show pander to or acknowledge the interests of its own fanbase. You are saying you dislike a show trying to connect to its viewer.

If you don't like gratuitous amounts of titillation/eroticism or sexualization that is fine but please for the love of Odin's mighty beard stop umbrella terming it as fanservice. Ecchi is a more appropriate term for this.

TL:DR = ANYTHING AIMED AT PLEASING THE AUDIENCE IS FANSERVICE!!!
