WHO DOESN'T LOVE FAN SERVICE?!/1/!?

Oh god don't get me started on Kanbaru. I love her so much hahaha. I'd post some fan service pics, but there aren't really any of her that are sfw lol. As far as anime girls go, she is by far my #1. I might actually rage if they took the fan service out of monogatari lol. That is the best use of ecchi I have ever seen :P.

Speaking from the perspective of Fan Service being sexually oriented display, a little isn't too bad. Heck, a lot isn't bad unless it is very unrealistic. Both in the situation presented AND the actual image used. I refer to an old show that came out during the "torpedo boobs" era.
Since the image is so poor, I feel the fan service of most of the series is unnecessary. But to each their own I guess

To summarize what I think I said the last time this came up:

It depends on if it enhances or detracts from how the audience is intended to experience the piece.

It's broader than what most accept it as. You can have the obvious kind like breasts, butts, abs and various body angles that are suggestive.

Then there's the rest which is like references to other shows/media i.e shaun of shaun of the dead in hotd! or characters crossover i.e. sket dance/gintama or kaiuto kid in conan and vice versa.

There's also the fanservice of certain plot twists that appear i.e. time travel stories have a loop or event they witness constantly, sometimes with various changes i.e. haruhi suzumiya the endless eight arc & steins gate mid season eps.

There's also certain character types and certain recurring themes that are nearly identical to one another. i.e. the running gag of the hate relationship eventually leading to love and the general mishaps that happen i.e. every other character sees their love for each other but themselves. inuyasha and kagome, tohru and kyo of fruits basket (lesser extent cos they don't hate each other but don't see eye to eye) & ohshc's haruhi and tamaki!

Ultimately it's whether if it adds to the plot to make the show better or if it's too ott thus it is the only redeeming thing about the plot. Too much can ruin the show beyond saving but then no fan service makes the show dead to begin with.

If you took out fanservice from Highschool of the Dead, I can guarantee you it would not even retain a fraction of its popularity. 80% of that show was fanservice.

Actually I really like HotD and wish they did take out a chunk the fanservice. I love the way it compares and contrasts against the standard American B-grade zombie movie. Which, come to think of it, are also laden with fanservice.

Then you get shows like Sora no Otoshimono that if you took the eechi fanservice out just wouldn't work. That show wouldn't be half as funny if the MC wasn't a huge perv

if I watch something like a harem and/or ecchi show then I know what I'm getting myself into so I don't mind if... However if I watch something that isn't a ecchi and/or harem then I'll most likely get pissed and annoyed by the fanservice since it puts up a big wall for the story meaning that the story can't progress any further!

What was the story of HotD anyway? All I remember is blood, nerd wish fulfillment, panties, and boobs jiggling. The rest is a bit fuzzy.

I think there is already a page about this topic. However, since I'm not an admin, I won't say further on that. What I can do is provide my two cents.

Fanservice is something I don't mind if it is used to enhance the story (Pet Girl of Sakura Hall, Strike the Blood) or does not distract from the main story (A Bridge to the Starry Skies, Pet Girl of Sakura Hall again, Ro-Kyu-Bu). However, when the fanservice becomes really in-your-face (Hyderminsion Neptunia, Strike Witches, High School of the Dead, We Without Wings), then it's a problem. It is possible to have a perverted main character without having fanservice (Amagami SS, Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat, Seitokai Yakuindomo, Naotsugu from Log Horizon).
I do make a special exception to a certain scene in Nisemonogatari that involves dental hygiene. THAT was hilarious.
In a way, fanservice is like a healthy diet. You need the right amount, but not too much. I personally find that fanservice needs to be subtle and not a focal point to be most effective.

Now, there is the fanservice we think of, girls undies and stuff. However, I found another thing that can qualify as fanservice because it can very easily distract from a story: blood.
High School of the Dead takes another hit in the fanservice. There is so much blood in that anime, that it becomes a focal point. Having the right amount of blood in a horror or action story will enhance the story, but HSOTD went too far. Another anime that has this problem is one that I am going to get a ton of flak for giving a negative for: Attack on Titan.
There are so many blood fountains and blood sprays everywhere. This made taking in the story and understanding the characters very difficult. As someone with diabetes (type 1), I can tell you a thing or two about blood. What I saw in HSOTD and especially in Attack on Titan is not physically possible. Example: When that one guy in AOT bit his tongue, the amount of blood shown would mean he bit his tongue completely off.
Make no mistake, the use of blood is not a bad thing (A Certain Magical Index, Beyond the Boundary, Another, Angel Beats). But it's a good idea to know how much blood should be used.

Now, to fanservice in general. Love it or hate it, there will be great shows that have it (Pet Girl of Sakura Hall, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Baka and Test, My Mental Choices, Mondaiji), and great shows that don't (Clannad, Sword Art Online, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Chuunibyou, K-On, Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat). However, it comes down to how much the viewer thinks the fanservice in an anime is a distraction and how much it is an enhancer. Either way, it's there.

Now, to be more biased, if an anime is primarily moved by fanservice (Heaven's Lost Property, High School of the Dead, Strike Witches, To Love-Ru, Campione, etc.), I won't like it. However, if it is used as an enhancer rather than a primary function like in two of my all time favorites (Pet Girl of Sakura Hall and A Bridge to the Starry Skies), or is used but still able to function properly without it (Infinite Stratos, Ro-Kyu-Bu, Strike the Blood), then there is a better chance of me liking the show.

I know I'm sounding repetitive, but fanservice is not something to be shoved into someone's face. Doing so will completely ruin a series.

Except Super Sonico has barely any fanservice/PLOT/whathaveyou in it. Sure each episode has at least a tiny bit, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't have a lot. Most certainly not enough for it to be the main selling point of the show.

I suppose Sonico wasn't the best choice to demonstrate a show that relies on fanservice for ratings, but my point was more leaning towards that the show exists primarily to support / advertise Sonico's character goods. I watched a couple episodes, but it didn't feel like it had any real substance - again, yet another slice of life comedy with a moéblob protagonist (who happens to have a rockin' body). It was refreshing to see a protagonist who goes to college instead of High School, but besides that, it felt... bland.

It might not rely on fanservice / plot / whathaveyou for ratings, but it's pretty much just to advertise / sell Sonico merchandise - as evidenced by the Blu-Ray / DVD set selling out before the entire series aired, something that was likely influenced by the inclusion of a Sonico figma with the set.
