A thread for talking about more controversial issues, such as politics, the economy, religion, and other things of that nature.

Okay, since nobody is really using this, I thought I'd try and get things rolling.

Marijuana legalization

The movement has been gaining a lot of momentum in recent years, and at this point it seems like in our lifetime marijuana will be legal across most if not all of the country.

But is this a good thing? Feel free to chip in

Have you seen gta5? No don't legalize marijuana. It's absolutely disgusting, mortifying, and lethal. I hate that stuff: drugs, alcohol, and tattoos. There's better things in life to get addicted to like anime, video games, writing, and cleaning?

Marijuana is a lot of things, and personally I don't like it and I have not and will not smoke it. But one thing it isn't is lethal. As far as we know, it's relatively mundane compared to alcohol and tobacco, but that doesn't mean it's safe by any means.

Research conducted by the Pew found that the US spends $48 billion dollars a year on the so called "War on Drugs", and legalizing marijuana and taxing it in a manner similar to alcohol could raise up to $41 billion dollars a year.

Current US drug policy isn't working. We have the most crowded prisons in the world. We also are also the largest market for marijuana in the world. Somewhere around 50% of Americans will try it at least once in their life time. Does this mean that 50% of Americans are criminals and don't deserve to be contributing members to society? No. However, racial minorities are often harmed by these laws a lot more. While a white person can dodge conviction much easier, Hispanics and blacks especially have a hard time getting out of possession charges.

While around half of Americans smoke weed at some point in their lives, being convicted with possession makes it almost impossible to get a good job. In today's market, nobody wants to hire a "criminal" when there are more ideal prospects out there.

Personally, I think it is hypocritical of us to have alcohol and tobacco be legal while marijuana is not

I'll chime in on this. The way I see it, if things that can be lethal, i.e. alcohol/tobacco products, I don't see why marijuana is still mostly illegal. I've never smoked it, but I've put thought into doing so if it became legal in my state because I hear its pretty good at relieving stress, God knows life can be all too stressful. But I basically agree with you panda, if it isn't necessarily doing excessive damage to society, keeping it illegal and filling up the jails with people who might have had just a little bit on them doesn't make much sense to me.

i think weed should be legal do to the fact that its just a way of life, its not as bad for you as tobacco either.i smoke, but i dont smoke weed or cigarets, mostly cigars or pipes. so anyway, i think it can also be an economic benefit, that is if the government puts a tax on it to gain interest and pay off some of our dept. another thing is i think its poitless making it illegal do to the fact that so many minorities get there hands on it anyway.

I still wouldn't want to legalize weed due to personal reasons of hating secondhand smoke. That stuff is disgusting to even breath, and people smoke where non-smokers have to actually pass by them. They don't even try to be considerate enough to actually move to an area of less human walking traffic. Not saying that all smokers do that, but the smokers who do.

I've never though about it that way before. I don't want to get high when I walk past the mall or something
