I expect nothing less than from IGN, crappy content.

Not enough Naruto characters?

Yes, I want Sakura and Sausage to be 1st and 2nd respectively.

On a sidenote, Sensui from Yuyu Hakusho should be on this list, he's vicious and complicated, literally!, at the same time.

As long as NANOHA TAKAMACHI(the yuri fraud of frauds)isn't IN this list, I'm okay.

If you don't know who she is, look her up!

hey, Nanoha's gonne friendship you in the face! besides, it's canon that Nanoha, Fate, and Hayate sleep together.

Don't delude yourself!

CHIMEKO knows they are just friends!!!

Canon, my butt...

Don't let the confused fool you.

CHIMEKO knows this...

And Nanoha can't do squat to me, cause Karas will take care of her.

Love how only anime that were done in English are on the list. Notice how the top 5 are all over 20 years old so your going to get a bias of older anime main characters.

I'm happy that guts, motoko, lain, and spike were there, but seriously no kamina or simon really
Overall a pretty good list not sure I fully agree with shinji being at the top but he does deserve to be there just not at #1

Kenshin made it in the top 5, that's all that I care about. Didn't really pay attention to much else

I think one of the issues I have with the list is it is called "Greatest", but one of their own criteria is the lasting power and influence of the characters. That has very little to do with how "great" an anime character, or any character is. If anything the list should be "Iconic", because that better describes their criteria. Even then I would still disagree with many of their choices, but it would at least make more sense than "Greatest". Let me put it another way just using their #1 pick. A very, very large amount of anime fans know who Shinji is. Even if they never saw EVA themselves, they probably have an inkling of who he is. However, the reason he is so well known is probably for all the wrong reasons. Shinj is an anime icon, I don't think many people can make a solid argument to state otherwise. What is debatable is whether he is actually a good character.

Honestly, I can't argue with their list all that much. Maybe except for the Eva characters. Eva was a great anime, but I don't know if you should list Asuka and Shinji in the top 25 anime characters. Also while Ed was a great shonen protagonist, I think a lot of the other characters in FMA were more interesting than he was. Finally, I don't know who I would personally add to greatest anime characters. One of my favorite main characters of any anime though was Sagara Sousuke from FMP. I seriously loved watching him apply military logic to everyday life.

Oh yes, and of course my favorite: Jing. Most mellow protagonist ever.

Shinji being number 1 is surprising. Not because he's a bad character, but I'm just surprised that such an anime-casual site doesn't just slap Goku at the top.

Not complaining though, Shinji is phenomenally well-written, even if you don't like him as a character.

I would say yes. He was by far the most relatable anime character. He showed that anime heros can be flawed humans and not some dumb cookie cutter Big 3 fake

Um, no. Kirito does not belong in lists like these. He's one of the worst protagonists of all time simply because he's a textbook example of a Deus Ex Machina-spamming Mary Sue/Gary Stu. Don't even suggest crap like that.

But really now, judging by this list, it seems the one who made it is a casual simply because his knowledge of anime is limited mostly to those 90s or early 2000s shonen anime that aired in Toonami. I mean, Naruto? FLCL? DBZ? Trigun? Cowboy Bebop?! Berserk? And friggin' Afro Samurai?! Many of those are just entry-level generic shonen/seinen anime meant for new anime fans! Oh, and don't even get me started on Cowboy Bebop. Spike DOES NOT deserve to be top 2 on that list. Cowboy Bebop is just an overrated generic sci-fi anime that's very episodic and forgettable in nature. The only reason why Westerners bow down to this thing like sheep is because they saw it on Toonami as kids, back during the days when the US was still anime-deprived. The fact that a generic Hollywood protagonist like Spike scored way higher than a masterfully-written character like Lelouch just astounds me. In Japan and parts of Asia, where anime is much more common, Cowboy Bebop actually tanked hard. Go figure why.

Where are the REAL masterpieces at? Where are the Utena characters? Where's Stein's Gate? Where's Madoka Magica? Where are the AIR characters? Kanon? Or Angel Beats? Where are the AnoHana characters? Or hell, where's Gundam Unicorn? Where's .hack//SIGN and .hack//Liminality? Where the hell are Gurren Lagann characters? Where are the UtaKata girls? Where are the lovable cast of OreImo? Hell, where is Cardcaptor Sakura? All of these shows I listed have much better and more complex characters than most of the Toonami/Shonen Jump garbage that IGN listed!

To their credit though, at least IGN listed characters from Evangelion, Death Note, and Code Geass on their list. At least I also agree that those shows had awesome characters.

Interesting.

I guess i'm quite the oddball anime fan because I don't really care for any of those characters except Kenshin, Haruhi, and Lain.

As a matter of fact, the list seems very... I don't know how to put it... maybe "shoneny?" or "seineny?" I feel like they just threw Haruhi in there as a token shoujo character or something...

Agreed.

Top 10/25/etc lists are good clickbait though. It's really just garbage content at the end of the day. Just because the guy who wrote it belongs to a big publication doesn't mean it should be taken any more seriously then any other random anime fan. Lists like this tend to be so subjective in nature that there's no point in even feigning professionalism. While I don't agree with much of this list I'm pretty content to just dismiss it and move along without too much of a fuss.

Also IGN is shit.
