Where are the lovable cast of OreImo?

Stopped reading there.

I'm trying to make a point. I am clearly aware that OreImo has a very divisive fanbase, especially after the OreImo S2 OVA fiasco. But still, as a whole, that show actually had pretty well-written characters. Even though OreImo might not be universally loved due to its divisive ending (even in Japan), still doesn't change the fact that even a show like that still has WAY better characters than generic shonen shows like Trigun, Naruto, or DBZ, which further invalidates this IGN list.

I've only seen a few of the characters myself since I've usually just watched newer anime. I guess I can understand all the older characters since most of the material back then really focused on having some sort of an ideal character compared to some of the more recent stuff. Not saying it hasn't, but I've seen less of it and most character archetypes have been done before.

Me personally, I would have liked to have seen Hachiman on this list since I think he is a good character despite only having 12 episodes in an anime that wasn't exactly a cultural phenomenon.

Ah, I see I see. In that case, I can most certainly agree with you.

Pretty boring/lackluster list. Though I actually like their #1 just because it's a ballsy and, dare I say, respectable opinion.

so Shinji was the way he was because the writer was depressed?? that's not very creative now is it lol...

have to agree with IGN though, "popularity doesn't always mean quality". idk what popularity really means tbh haha

Off topic: I personally don't understand all the hatred for the Oreimo S2 OVAs. I mean, he didn't end up with who I felt was best girl or even 2nd best girl, but I just don't get the rage about. I enjoyed it from beginning to end for what it was.

On topic About that poll, I think it sucks. It's like they took any anime that became widely popular in NA and stuck the characters in.

O'course.

Anyway, poll seems fine. I'd rather have these characters then certain "masterpieces" from a couple years back.

You know, I wonder how less otaku-ish Americans would react to Hunter x Hunter if they put it on Toonami or something. HxH is personally my favorite shonen anime, and I have to say it interests me far more than definitely DBZ or Bleach. Naruto would be a distant #2, just because it can be clever and well written, but it can also suck.

What is great about Hunter x Hunter is that it is constantly something different, no two arcs are exactly the same, and EVERYTHING in it revolves around strategy. There are almost no one-sided battles, and the battles that are one-sided have a clear explanation why they are one sided and what impact that has on the rest of the story.

Anyway, what I am trying to say is. Hunter x Hunter is not your typical gung-ho Shonen show like DBZ, I wonder if this style of shonen show could become as popular as DBZ or as Naruto. It has quite a devoted fan base here on CR. Could we one day perhaps see Killua, Kurapika, Gon, or Hisoka in the top 25?

Main thing I couldn't help noticing:

25: Woman (dressed like a man)
24-15: Men
14-9: Women, plus Vegeta
8-1: Men

From this we can conclude that a) IGN almost forgot to include female characters at all in their list of sociopathic badass dudes, and b) Vegeta is a trap.

Their best OPs list the other day wasn't very terrible but this list was pretty bad. I don't even know why they made this list...that is way too broad of a category to try to make a list out of @.@

The reasonung behind the list makes sense! I mean we all could add or disagree as the intro says! They did make a place in history!

Top 25 Greatest Anime Characters
Ranking the best of the best of Japanese animation!
by Ramsey Isler FEBRUARY 4, 2014

Who are the best characters created in the history of anime? It's a debate that has been held on Internet forums since Internet forums were invented. We thought it was time to revisit this hotly-debated topic and hopefully bring some new perspective to the conversation, so we've compiled a new list of the most original and awesome characters in Japanese animation.

There are many factors involved here: legacy, impact, recognition. But for this list, the most important factor was artistic greatness. We were looking for characters who were something special for their time; unique and powerful in their own way. But, most importantly, we selected characters who changed what we thought anime could be. Characters who weren't so special didn't make the cut, even if they're famous. Sure, there are many anime characters who are wildly famous and provide the engine for a commercial machine, but sales and marketing don't make a character great. Skillful writing, design, and ingenuity make a character great.

So we'll be up front. If you're looking for Naruto, Ichigo, or Monkey...you're not going to find them here. They are each enjoyable in their own way, and no one can deny their commercial success, but popularity doesn't always mean quality. Just like blockbuster films don't always win Oscars, and the top-selling music artists don't always win Grammys.

We know there will be disagreement here. In fact we're hoping for it. When it comes to fandoms, anime fans are some of the most deeply knowledgeable types around, and we'd love to know who you'd rank as the best examples of anime star power.

IGN seriously all 90s and early 20s. Can we get on the time right now. This ain't no 90s nor early 20s. This is freaking 2014. The list that I read was pretty OLD folks that used to watch when they were airing on Toonami. I hope that crunchyroll top 25 anime is going to be on the currently generation.

I felt this list was pretty predictable. I can agree with some of them, but others definitely made me groan.

Koda89 wrote:

I think one of the issues I have with the list is it is called "Greatest", but one of their own criteria is the lasting power and influence of the characters. That has very little to do with how "great" an anime character, or any character is. If anything the list should be "Iconic", because that better describes their criteria. Even then I would still disagree with many of their choices, but it would at least make more sense than "Greatest". Let me put it another way just using their #1 pick. A very, very large amount of anime fans know who Shinji is. Even if they never saw EVA themselves, they probably have an inkling of who he is. However, the reason he is so well known is probably for all the wrong reasons. Shinj is an anime icon, I don't think many people can make a solid argument to state otherwise. What is debatable is whether he is actually a good character.

You hit the nail on the head; I've yet to see any of the EVA incarnations, but I still have a decent idea of who Shinji is, and I had a feeling he'd be on this list somewhere.
