In reading through the comments of anime some people tend to get very upset over "spoilers", most of the time in reading these spoilers I have a "Huh? THAT was a spoiler?" reaction. Even clicking on the tag rarely reveals to me what I would consider a spoiler and it is pretty rare for something like that to bother me even if it is a genuine spoiler; sometimes I enjoy reading the comments before a video, but if you are really afraid of spoilers, why would you do that? Personally I think the spoiler tag is more overused than underused and some people need to chill a little and not get so "uptight".

What is a spoiler, and when should the spoiler tag be used? Should a person wary of spoilers even read the comments before watching?

sometimes i just see them by accident... like the Opening song is the most guilty of spoiling. CR's video screenshot for the episode has spoiled me a few times, haha.

i'm really OCD about spoilers. some people aren't, and they can read through most of the spoilers and still enjoy watching the story. i can't do that. quite the opposite.

A spoiler is anything that you are told about a show before you actually see it in the show. A massive spoiler would be...say, "Darth Vader is Luke's father." That's a huge spoiler. Basically, use spoiler tags whenever you're farther ahead of a story than others. For example, if the people watching Kuroko no Basuke haven't read the manga but you have, any manga info you'd post would need to be put in spoiler tags. Of course, unless someone asks it's best not to post spoilers at all.

And no, you don't want to read the comments before you've finished an episode. Not all of them are spoiler-tagged.

No. Definitely not. Some people are really good about tagging Spoilers, others aren't. They don't really crack down too hard on spoilers in threads around here, so you're on your own (caveat emptor). Lots of manga/LN spoilers sometimes.

FWIW... Spoilers don't bother me at all... I enjoy spoilers and actively seek them out, but if you're watching a series, or plan to, and DON'T want to be spoiled, even by accident, then don't scroll through a thread until you've watched it.

Personally, I think spoiler tags should be used in story related discussion, video clips of eps, and screenshots. I don't think things like opening and ending songs should have to be stuck in spoiler tags, but I do feel like they should be used liberally. It's not like they're an inconvenience.

I also think time is a factor as well. By the time an anime or game or whatever is a few years old, I don't feel like spoiler tags are necessary at all. Had a big debate about this one when I was in a thread one time having a discussion about Ao no Kiseki and Ao no Kiseki Evolution.

DANG IT, knew i shouldn't have clicked on that spoiler, now all my dreams are dashed

anyway, i get pretty annoyed having to click the spoiler tag thing and seeing that it was something that just happened in the episode. Like ?? how is that a spoiler?? imo it isn't a spoiler unless you've read the manga/light novel/watched the raws/etc and it hasn't happened in the latest released episode.

really, if you're so worked up about spoilers in the comments under an episode, just don't read them beforehand... it's not that hard... i don't even understand the point of reading them beforehand anyway, since it doesn't make sense to comment on an episode you haven't even watched yet, why would you read it? i understand anime openings are ridiculously long, either skip it or google something while you're waiting for it to be over.

sorry about the slight rant, it just irks me for some unknown (yet lame) reason

I personally don't mind spoilers too much. The only time I sometimes get annoyed is if something really dramatic and huge happens, mainly if the story is built around not knowing that piece of information. If it's a joke/gag or something, though, I don't see the big problem. It's not like it gets ruined if someone talks about someone's reaction to a gag and specifically mentions what it was, because jokes can still be funny for me even if I know of it ahead of time, due to a joke's humor being based around actually watching it. However, if it's a Mystery story and getting spoilers takes away a lot of its mystique, then I mind. So, in short, I sometimes mind in drama, hardly in comedy.

Ok I don't see the reason to freak out about spoilers, but I don't see the reason for someone to write a spoiler either. If you are a person that is dying to watch the show why would you pause the start of the opening and read the comments before watching it. And there is that guy that writes out manga spoilers but if it says spoiler and you don't want your melon to get spoiled then don't click it. some people don't even bother to cover up the spoiler in the comments. If you really want to discuss something head to the forums and start a conversation.
