You know what else is weird? "Major spoilers" that aren't true. As in, they're completely fabricated, but believable. So the whole time you're watching a show you're making assumptions based on knowing a spoiler that actually doesn't exist.

That can really screw you over too.

I usually spoiler tag anything from a Manga, even in the Manga forums, even when it is old news (early from the series), because I have seen before some people get really uptight about what you say in the forums. For all I care spoil all you want, but it would be nice if people said WHAT they are spoiling before the spoilers, so then people could choose: Do I want to see this spoiler? or Is this even qualified to be a spoiler? etc etc.

The only time I see spoilers in an Anime forum as an actual "spoiler" is when someone watches the show on the darkside, which tends to be a few days earlier than the legal releases. There are quite a few of us around here who will only watch a show if and when it airs on CR or FUNi or the few other legal sites around. So until it airs there, it is, in my opinion, a spoiler. But after it airs legally, I don't see the point of a spoiler comment, unless you are say giving your opinion of what would happen next, like who might end up with who in a rom-com, or who will die next in some action show, stuff like that.

5 Reasons to Use Spoilers

1. You are discussing information from the source material that has not yet been introduced in the anime.

2. You are revealing a critical plot point of an already aired anime, one that could ruin the show for someone who has not already watched it.

3. Cover up your huge quote trees.

4. Cover up your huge pictures.

5. You are revealing any sort of information about a show that could detract from someone's enjoyment of a show. If you enjoyed a show without any of it being spoiled for you, try and preserve the wonderful experience you had for people who come after you.

Disclaimers & Qualifiers

1. Show specific threads are obviously a special case. People should know the subject being discussed within will contain spoilers for the show. Source material spoilers are more of a problem. But, in general threads, I think it is bad form to assume people have already seen anything.

2. Labeling spoilers helps save people a lot of grief. "LN Spoiler," "Manga Spoiler," "X Show Spoiler."

3. It won't be perfect. I had a certain significant surprise in Gurren Lagann spoiled for me because people were indirectly referencing it in the Kill la Kill thread. No ill will there, nor even negligence really, but it was still kind of a bummer.

4. I don't always follow my own rules. Cause I forget them.

5. I think if we go at spoilers with an "others first" mentality, of wanting to preserve the experience of our favorite anime for other people, we'll be pretty well of.

It comes down to whether or not the person who doesn't want it spoiled visits the forum pages or not. Easiest way to not be spoiled is not to read the at all. aka if you're not posting in the anime section you won't find spoilers for the anime.

Consideration should be given from the other though. We all like talking about said thing but like conan, I regretted looking up the forum posts cos of twists/new characters. Kind of ruined some bits but then the show has been going for years, so it's not like current spoilers.
Then again some spoilers are what keep me watching, i.e. one piece, cos of that one spoiler that i won't repeat, i now am interested in the whole story when before i gave up on it so many years ago.

Again, if you don't want to water down the shock, avoid the internet and people. If you wan a hint of things to come, then be prepared for info overload.

The problem with spoilers is that I'm pretty good at deciphering vague clues.

So for example, someone once posted "I felt really bad for (Girl X), I mean you can understand why he did it, but still...." in the World God Only Knows during the earluy epsiodes of season 3. Which by itself is vague, but once you get to a certain part in the plot the context becomes clear and you realise exactly what's going to happen.
