She's not really a magical girl though, is she? She's more of a metaphysical-symbolic-allegorical girl.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is technically a magical girl anime, and Utena herself gets powers from a magical source and goes through transformation sequences for almost every episode. Hell, eventually, Utena's power is drawn from the bond between her and Anthy. She fits the bill.

I don't quite agree. I would put Utena among Serial Experiments Lain, Evangelion...Those kind of allegorical/symbolic series with layers of complex meanings. To me, magical girl anime is Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura...Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Utena is (in my opinion) psychological and intellectual. The entire show is a symbol for growing up/graduating into the adult world etc. Utena might have her transformation, but the entire basis of the series is not magical girl, but rather a strange world of hidden meanings and abstract imagery.

Utena is a magical girl show, but it's also a deconstruction, just like Madoka and Tutu. It deconstructs magical girl, shoujo, and fairy tales to showcase the more harsh side of growing up and the foibles of adolescence. Besides, Madoka and Tutu are both magical girl anime that happen to be intellectual, why can't Utena. Hell, Madoka and Tutu probably wouldn't even exist without Utena.

Tutu and Madoka are intellectual, but not the way Utena is. Utena is so symbolic, that you really have to dig through the layers to discover the meaning of what the anime really is about. Tutu and Madoka have their moments, but not to this scale where the whole show is based on symbolism, and is so psychological. In my opinion, it will never be a magical girl show, nor a deconstruction - though it is a deconstruction in other aspects.

I'll agree with the assesments.

Utena is more a deconstruction of the Shoujo Genre, while Tutu and Madoka are deconstructions of the Magical Girl Sub-Genre

I don't label Utena as a Magical Girl. Besides...isn't she a Prince? Or do I remember it wrong? It's been a while, and I've only seen an early portion of the show.

Pretty much, My Otome has the best magical girl outfits. They are all so great that it's hard to choose which one is the best.

Other than the incredibly long Shoujo legs, their Eternal Sailor Senshi outfits are really beautiful. Pity they were only in the manga. Hopefully in the new anime we'll see them.

These 3 are my top favorites, in order- Kyouko, Vita, Sayaka.
I also like Madoka's outfit as well, but not sure if a favorite.

Others I love would be the rest of the Nanoha characters' outfits, and Hoshikuzu Witch Meruru from Oreimo (currently watching the PreCure series so might update this later)

Well regardless of that, the community and even it's creator has labeled Utena as a magical girl anime, so it is a magical girl anime.

I'm sorry, but I disagree, and it seems that others agree with me as well. Still, you are of course entitled to your own opinion. I shall be keeping mine though. G'day.

So she has a magical girl outfit? Great. That was an easy quote pyramid to condense.

From that I'd be a smart ass and say Kuko (Haiyore! Nyaruko-san), but I'm not sure if she's actually wearing anything.

Hmmm i'm not sure she is either... but by the logic... Nyaruko is/would be a magical girl? And she has that armor thing going on...

Its not really a magical girls outfit. She has her uniform that she wears to school, and when she's ready to duel someone (which is symbolic), her school uniform gets a little bit more fancy. And this not only happens to her. Several others characters who duel with her (both guys and girls), get a slightly modified uniform, or some (girls) get a dress to wear (when they copy the Rose Bride - long story) which is the same style, just different colors.

So it is a different thing then being a magical girl....Or boy.

Thanks. Oh wow, another fav of mine LOL. But seriously, the character design made me quickly think of Hideaki Sorachi's art.
