This is a question that I've been thinking about for a while.

I've seen many pictures of HUGE collections of anime-related merchandise. Obviously, DVD's and Blu-Ray's make up the vast majority of these collections, but then there are posters, figures, those pillow things and various other merchandise.

I'm curious as to what people do with their anime collections, no matter what size.

For those of you with huge collections of DVD's, do you watch them or are they mostly display only? Do you arrange and rearrange your figures? Change out posters? Have a different waifu pillow for each day of the week?

As for me, I have a pretty small collection, only 5-6 series, and those are my absolute favorites. I do re-watch them, and that's mostly why I have the physical copies. Sadly, they are sitting in a box far away right now and I'm looking forward to rewatching FMA: Brotherhood when I get back home.

Again, this is about your anime collection, no matter if you collection just DVD's, just figures or all of the above, in any quantity.

I use my DVD's to collect dust. It's kind of inconvenient for me to actually use them anymore.
I don't have any other anime merchandise. I have a few collectors editions of games, but those mainly just collect dust as well. Now if only I could find a way to market dust...

Funny tidbit, the first anime dvd I ever bought was Ghost in the Shell back in 1998, I still haven't watched it.

Around 3 three years ago I had a seizable collection, it was probably $1500-$2000 worth of DVDs/blu-rays.
It got to a point where it was just too much stuff and so I sold most of it.
Now I only have 5 or 6 anime series/movies there on the shelf, the ones I couldn't part with..

I collect figures for aesthetics. It's a new hobby, and I only have 5 as of now (4 of which are Nendos). I do rearrange them on occasion. I've never bought DVDs because I know that I would never actually play them.

I was going to say exactly this.

My DVD/BR collection exists because I just like owning some things, I feel good supporting the fact that they were both made and brought over to the US, and if the occasion should ever arise I can let an interested party borrow them.

With that in mind I bought duplicate sets of Texhnolyze and Serial Experiments Lain which I donated to the campus library, and a coworker (we both worked there at the time) donated Eden of the East. Which was the first I'd seen of it.

Anyway, I'll occasionally pull out something to watch, but mostly it's just being happy that I own it. And I'll think about buying additional paraphernalia after I've bought all the anime I want to own. Figures look nice, but also a tad expensive.

I've never been a fan of hanging posters, but if I ever got any that looked really good I'd frame them somewhere.

All in all i've spent probably $20,000+ on anime and manga over 9 years. I have as much as I can fit in my room stacked on four 7 foot tall shelves. These are the shows I watch and read frequently. The crappier series are stored in my closet. I own no merchandise or posters other than what came with some limited editions.

I CAN'T STOP COLLECTING THINGS, HELP ME!

I've got about 29 Different anime Series, the majority complete but a few are straggling or oversized. Dragonball Z is 9 seasons alone, and I only got the first Dragonball. Ranma 1/2 I got 6 Seasons and the OVA"s, the 7th Season eludes me. I also have 1-4 Voumes of .Hack/Sign, Hajime no Ippo, Scrapped Princess, and Digimon.

Then we get to the secondary aspect, figures. I've got 5 Figma's and a load of random ones, including 3 Gunpla Modles. I got a Revoltech Rei...but I don't like Revoltech..the quality just isn't enough for me. I've got a Kanji from Persona 4, a Chogokin Saber, Megaman X's Zero(aka Blaster instead of Z-saber), and a Rammus hat on a Foam mannequin head...that one is just fun to me.

Moving forward AGAIN. I've got a lot of books I collected long ago, as well as recent ones. I actually have most of the Dragonlance series, I was hellah into them during Junior High. But the VERY FIRST DAY of High School, racist white nerds insulted me for not being nerdy enough, so I had to start reading the whole Drizzit's series to be nerdy enough, ergo I have all of THOSE.
Of course I'm also toting the entire Game of Thrones franchise in book-form, and contain various books on Drawing that were a waste. I've been trying to draw for 8 years, no progress. I keep them all on a shelf in my closet.
Then we have Manga, for which I have two Omnibuses of Genshiken, the entire GTO "14 Days in Shonan" series of 9, and two Ranma 1/2 volumes. Practically nothing there, compared to my sister and her mountain of Shoujo.

Moving on, I also have a sizable Sword collection. Hosting two Hanwei Forge pieces, and a SBG Custom Katana. I also have a vast number of training swords and trinkets from Conventions, altho those tended to break and I no longer do that. So I got a wooden Rukia Zanbakto...or however you spell it, two Bokken's, a Shinnai(but it's totally broken now), and a set of Code Steel training weapons, including the Bokken, O-Bokken, Hand-and-a-half, Arming, Buckler, and Gladiolus. Obviously not everything fit on the only Sword-shelf I put up.

I've only recently started to collect/use/put up various anime posters and prints from Cons...but I've got like, 3 of them. OH, and I put my old Skyrim and Oblivion maps on the wall...for old times sake. The wall is about 90% White still, so I've got a LOOOONG way to go, and plan to spend a bunch of money next Con I go to and buy a mass of the cheaper Anime movie posters, try to liven up the room.

Do I collect too much shit? Yes, I do.

Does my room look like a stereotypical Otaku's? No....I'm trying but DAMN IT IT'S HARDER THAN IT LOOKS.

Yes, I do rearrange my Figures a lot, but I'd rather just collect more of them. I really want a tall book case to hold'em up and display them.

Anime however? I tend to lend them out. I currently have Gurren Lagann being watched by a friend, and Samurai 7 by someone at work. I bout Trigun specifically to lend it to someone at work, and did just that when I got it. I havn't actually used the DVD set myself.

My family also rewatches Dragonball Z every year. My brother will borrow whatever season he wants to watch, or I'll put it on the T.V. in the background. Marathon mode is the shit you know.

I also tend to buy Anime in order to watch them. Neon Genesis Evangelion, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, After War Gundam X, Soul Eater, Ranma 1/2, and Berserk aren't commonly streamed shows, some of which only exist on dubious sites at the far reaches of the Internet. They also tend to fluctuate in price more so than new shows. The Slayers was $35 for 3 seasons, THAT'S LIKE 76 EISODES! YOU'RE PAYING LESS THAN 50 CENTS AN EPISODE!

I ain't no half-baked fan. I buy the anime I like to support the companies and shows that I like, and I suggest you all do the same, if only so you can easily share it with people. It's far easier to convince them to watch a DVD than use a Streaming service.

Slightly off topic:

You have my most sincere condolences, nobody should be forced to read those books. That said,

I have a new thing for you to buy. Have you heard of A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen?

My anime collection?

Pray tell me, where I can acquire the money to fund this nonexistent collection of mine?

EDIT: Excuse me while I go vent my frustrations and absolute jealousy at the collections displayed.
