Arkham Horror is probably about as hardcore as you can go when it comes to boardgames. That shit takes at least half an hour to an hour to set up so if you're just starting out. It's really fun though. Mansions of Madness is kind of like Arkham Horror except that it takes less time and is a lot more story-driven which is probably why it's my favorite out of all the games I named. The last three are deckbuilding games, but they're still all fun. If you like cute japanese maids, play Tanto Cuore.

Oh, I forgot Elder Sign.. >_< It's the same concept as Arkham Horror and Mansions but in a dice game format. It's pretty simple so I guess it'll be the easiest to get into if you're new to tabletop gaming.

Arkham horror sound really cool!!!

I worry a lot about the cute maid thing being male centric. But, I've seen several girls reviewing the game on amazon etc.

So, I imagine that in the game, love is a purer and more general thing and that none of the characters look indecent?

I was considering buying Dominion for a while and Miskatonic School for Girls sounds fun as well.

Well, Tanto Cuore is not about love or anything. You just hire maids to help you get the most victory points at the end really. And they look cute, not really indecent.

Miskatonic School for Girls is so much fun! You get to buy cards for your opponent every turn to mess them up! :D

Dominion is pretty much the quintessential deckbuilding game so you can't really go wrong with it.

If you want some tabletop wargames; then I would suggest infinity the game, warmachine/hordes, or dust tactics.
I'm currently playing Infinity the game, and it is one of my favorites. It has the scifi anime style, like from ghost in the shell and appleseed, and its relatively cheap compared to other miniature wargames.

There are your typical board games you can get anyone to play - the ones everybody has heard of;
Then there are the serious ones such as Arkham Horror. It is good, but takes a bit of dedication and time to play. Fuddyduddies aren't going to. (IE people with only an hour to play, lame relatives, ect) If you have a group of cool friends with the time for it, then yeah Arkham is great.

I would recommend "Settlers of Catan" it's well designed enough for a serious board gamer to enjoy, and easy enough for a casual only board gamer to pick up. The board is a really neat map that randomly creates an island, then you place villages to gather resources trade them, build stuff with them, and try to become the most influential settler.

"Pandemic" is also one of those In-between games. Different thing about that is that you play with several other people cooperatively. You all win, or you all lose - and it works! You each play a different professional and work together trying to stop the spread of deadly diseases across the globe. It's an interesting feeling to play a board game with everybody working together. And ideal if anybody in a group gets pouty about losing.

I'm actually a huge fan of the Game of Thrones board game. It's all the fun and strategy of Risk with 0 luck factoring in. It's a true strategy game, if you can get a bunch of people to actually follow the rules.

Fufufufu.

Parcheesi is a childhood favorite of mine. I also thoroughly enjoy CSI board games, with the one featuring the Grissom team being my favorite. Also, Monopoly, Clue, Life, and Sorry. Two of which have already been mentioned. Monopoly isn't for the impatient, and can be ridiculously cut-throat.

I love Go, and would like to eventually get my own set, unfortunately I would only be able to play against myself. The only way I can play it is on Flyordie,

Dungeons & Dragons :3. Though from responses - an answer similar to it would be Monopoly.

You can Download the KGS Client here: http://www.gokgs.com/download.jsp

Once you make an account, you'll be able to play with lots more random people :P

I'm Atheyon there as well, if you'd like to play sometime.

oh... board games.

When I saw tabletop gaming I thought it was about A) good old RPGs or b) miniatures battle games (like WH40K or FoW)

nuts.
